Overdrive from roamers
Hi everyone
Just saw the global roamers site just wondering if anyone has got the overdrive for the disco 2
How much was it and did you notice a improvement on gas mileage
Thanks for your time have a good one

Re: Overdrive from roamers
I also have one in a 110 and am very happy with it.
I also have a 300tdi with the 1.6 military transfer case which used to put my engine RPM above 3000 at 100 km/h. The engine is fine with that but it is very loud and a little disconcerting. The overdrive drops it to somewhere between 2000 and 2500, right around the torque peak. I really like the combo of the 1.6 box with the OD as I get good acceleration around town with the lower gearing but can still keep up with traffic on the freeway.
I don't think you'll see much in the ways of increased mileage. The mileage is more dictated by aerodynamics and the speed you drive. A D2 has the 1.2 transfer box so you should be fine driving at 120 to 130, but that speed is terrible for mileage. I notice my mileage is best when I keep it to 100 km/h and degrades rapidly above that.
Defenders and Discos have the aerodynamics of a brick, so don't expect better mileage while driving faster.
If you do go for the overdrive I recommend getting the extended sump and the temperature gauge. These OD's are tough, but if you are driving a loaded vehicle in hot weather for many hours, they can get hot and that will kill the overdrive.

Thanks for the reply
I'm definitely going for that setup how much was the cost ?
But am looking for a Bit more last summer we're I got stuck on the old hiway when the kokahala got closed do to that toxic spill we're I had to drive with my hood cracked to keep the temp down
So I was looking into reverse louver for heat to escape
Got the rover off one of the members here who did amazing work on everything

Re: Overdrive from roamers
If you are overheating at all you have a cooling issue. I'd spend the money on a flush and new rad and thermostat before louvering anything. Remember rover engines are very sensitive to overheating.

I'm not sure Ray makes a shift linkage that fits in the Disco. Swapping transfer case gearing is not cheap or easy. You'd probably have to make a hybrid case from a military defender and disco 2, as they are similar, but not quite the same. (ie gears are different internally, the brake and speedo drive is different externally, and you have to add the linkage for the manual center diff lock.)

Re: Overdrive from roamers
Overdrive is about 2000 and if you wanted lower gearing it would likely be at least another 1000; if you did the work. Also an overdrive will not help with overheating, nor would swapping the transfer case for lower gearing.
I'd start with getting your cooling system into top shape: new rad ($200), new thermostat ($10), maybe new water pump ($100?), check hoses, new cap ($20), check fan clutch, pressure test system. Maybe before that just check that the rad isn't plugged with bugs and leaves and other junk.
This engine is also known for slipped liners which can cause a head gasket leak which can consume coolant and then have overheating. To check that, see if you can squeeze the top rad hose while running and warm (use gloves, hose will be quite warm). If it is really hard you have a pressurized cooling system and a blown head gasket. You could still have a blown head gasket if it is soft, but less likely.

For a D2 with a 1.2 transfer case I suspect it would be too much. I would talk to Ray.

Re: Overdrive from roamers
For those that are interested we are introducing an overdrive to fit the Disco II transfer case. It will be on our website soon with the designation ROAMERDRIVE DQ.
We see a demand for the product as not being so much in Land Rovers but with owners of North American trucks who are retrofitting the 230 transfer cases to get the benefits of the locking center differential. A couple of US companies are offering an adapter plate to mount the LT230 to the common NV4500 Dodge/GM transmission. We are also prototyping our own direct adapter for this purpose along with a bell housing to join the ISUZU 4BD series motor to the front of the NV4500 using a Dodge 12 inch clutch. This should make it possible to put a bullet proof ISUZU 4BDI (As fitted to Australian 110s) or 4BD2T into a 110 and have a far stronger transmission than the R380.
The DQ overdrive will be sold without lever kit - not needed in the US applications.
IF any members are interested in this please come by and take a look at the bits. We are installing the first set into our 1973 101 Fwd Control. call before you come to make sure I'm in.

Re: Overdrive from roamers
Hi Ray, my 1988 RRC (3.5) has an LT230 and I am pushing 3000rpm at freeway speeds. I wonder if a Roamerdrive would be a good idea to bring the rpms down for better fuel economy. What do you think? Ray H

Re: Overdrive from roamers
Ray if it is a manual you would see some improvement but most of the 88 year here are autos and that makes the overdrive a bit problematical.
We just purchased a 2000 Disco I that has been converted to a 300Tdi/380 and it is a very sweet vehicle. You may be better off putting your money into a diesel conversion for your Range Rover and adding an overdrive later if you want a significant improvement in economy. I think Jeremy has some 300Tdi motors in stock. Ray W

Yes mine is automatic. Wasn’t sure if that would even work with an overdrive but figured I’d ask.tallgypsy wrote:Ray if it is a manual you would see some improvement but most of the 88 year here are autos and that makes the overdrive a bit problematical.

Don just fully rebuilt the 3.5 so I plan to keep that engine for a while.

Re: Overdrive from roamers
Will the overdrive fit in a Factory 200tdi RRC that has had the borg t-case replaced with a Disco 1 LT230? I thought there might not be enough physical space to fit it under the floor of the RRC.

Re: Overdrive from roamers
Can't quite think how that would work with an auto... Wouldn't you have to stop the vehicle before engaging or disengaging the overdrive? Seems like that would reduce the desirability of the OD considerably...

I kinda figured I’d engage the overdrive before starting out on highway trips, but leave it disengaged for trails or around town.

I don’t think you are supposed to use the overdrive in the lower gears though. It would put a lot of stress on it.

What do you mean? I use it in all gears in my manual transmission. It just makes every gear 26% taller.

Re: Overdrive from roamers
The instruction sheet says you can use it in any gear, just not from a complete stop. Having seen the inside of them (and having cooked one) I'm pretty sure heat is the main problem. I don't think they are torque sensitive like the faireys and other overdrives.

Re: Overdrive from roamers
Yeah, i'm not sure it would be great with an automatic. 1. Autos use a torque converter so you might be above the torque limits there. 2. OD instructions say don't use it from a dead stop. Not sure if that would make it pop or not. 3. I'm not sure how it would work to shift in and out of OD with an auto. I guess you can still pop it into neutral while driving....
Or just get bigger tires. I'm sure we can fit 38's with a little trimming. :)

Yeah I had 32s on my Arctic trip. Nice on the highway but a bit less peppy on the hills.

Re: Overdrive from roamers
Ray you could do that. Lots of people have proposed it but I have never seen it done. Before starting out check the space. If it is similar to a Disco1 you need to make some small mods. Ray

Re: Overdrive from roamers
I should just drop in a 5 speed manual once the auto box eventually dies. Then I can put in the overdrive and all is good.
