buying a series 3 exmod without papers?

i am looking to get back into land rovers and have found a project. It's a series 3 ex mod and is missing a body mounted vin plate but has the chassis vin. The current owner doesn't have paper work and says neither did the guy he bought it from. With out being able to track this down is it impossible to register this truck? and is the cost likely not worth trying?

I think if you can prove you bought it legitimately it can be done but it’s a pain in the ass to insure anything with ICBC that hasn’t previously been insured in BC. Our td5 disco waited ages for the paperwork (as in almost a year)

Has it been registered in BC ever? If it has you just have a paper chasing exercise. Not impossible but definitely a pain. If you can't get the last registered owner (may be dead) to sign papers it is more involved.

If it has never been registered in BC you will need to get a vehicle inspection before/concurrently with the paper chasing. That means everything has to work down to the wipers and all the lights.

It all comes down to the price vs pain in the butt.

Can you let me know how you got the registration papers? I have a series 1 without the paperwork, my father in law doesn't have the paperwork, the guy he bought it from has passed away and the family don't think he had paperwork for it.

It was originally registered in BC, have original Land Rover records that it was shipped to BC and the side of it has sign writing on it when it was on a farm in BC.

Depending how far back your 80" was last registered, you may just have to go to an ICBC outlet and ask them to look it up by the VIN number.

If doesn't have a vin plate on the pass side of the dash, then the number to look for isthe frame vin stamped at the outside upper edge of right (or possibly left) front spring shackle bracket that is welded to the frame. Depending on the condition of the frame and layers of paint, might be a bit difficult to find. :bounce:

This is sensitive to the correct VIN and the correct year, which is the year it was registered as, not necessarily the correct model year of manufacture/design. I have 4 Rovers here (1 driver, 1 project, 2 parts hulks) and none of them is registered with the correct year per the date of manufacture, all are off by a year due to registration year being the assigned model year.

As you can see, it is doable, but somewhat painful if you don't have all the paperwork in order. I understand preventing vehicle theft, but a 50+ year old wreck that someone wants to restore and has little value should be treated different than a recent or high value vehicle.

The one thing I would add is you are going to want to find an autoplan agent that has been through this kind of thing. They can be very helpful and also a giant pain. I don't have one to recommend or I would.

Other thing is plan to spend a few hours at the ICBC office in North Van at some point. I found it easier to just go there with all my papers.

3. ICBC will send you back a letter with the most recent owner info they have. Write another letter to this address and include a transfer form for them to sign. (Often they have moved, died, or the address is defunct but do it anyway) Mail this by registered mail.

4. About a week later this usually is returned to you. Do not open it. It needs to remain sealed for ICBCs paper trail. Take it as well as your original bill of sale and papers from ICBC to a notary. ICBC should have included the appropriate form to be notarized. In notaries office write out your story in longhand as per doing above steps. Get him to verify it and charge you $20-$30.

5. Take all to any full service autoplan office and sit back while they figure out what to do. (I usually photocopy everything before giving it to them). Usually they call their help desk and new papers are generated within 15-20 minutes. Take what they generate. As said above model year and other vehicle info is often incorrect. Deal with year,model,colour, fuel type etc after you have papers as it's fairly straightforward after you have a legit registration in hand.

Typical cost in $$ is around $75 to complete the process.

Hi Dave, how long did you find it took ICBC to reply sent my letter with documents just over a couple of weeks ago. Not surprisingly ICBC cashed the cheque quickly.

I received my reply a week or so ago, had to write to the last registered owner. Looking on the internet the original address has been knocked down and replaced with a shop, hopefully in a month's time I can go back to ICBC for the next step.

No response from the address, it's gone past the 30 days so been to ICBC and need to fill in another form and go to a Notary Public then I can get it transferred into my name. Hopefully should get it sorted in the next few weeks.

Have a good regy for the 1999 frame, non for the 1964 body.

I have the 1964 serial number plate and ran the serial number through Land Rover and it came up as a 1964.

Ran it through ICBC History and it comes up registered in BC as a 1965.

Ran it through Car Proof and nothing.

Got a friend that is a Auto Plan Agent so we'll see how long it takes.

They were normally registered as the year of the original registration as the model year, which explains why many don't match the correct model year of production. 1 of the 4 I have are registered as the correct model year.
