VHF radio course

#1 Post by kRiS » Tue Sep 27, 2005 1:23 pm

There is a group of people that would be interested in taking Basic Licensing Course for VHF radio.
if we can get enough interest in this course we might be able to have an instructor come in and do this for us.
I don't know any details yet, once we have enough people I will get in contact with Ham radio club .

I'd certainly be interested if I can make it down to the city. Unfortunately during the week/weeknights aren't terribly good for me...but if I had an idea for a schedule, and I can make it, It's definately something I'm up for!

Great, that's plenty of people to get a course set up.
I have contacted few Ham radio clubs to see what they offer,

Surrey one offers course but I won't know any details till this Wednesday, they have a meeting this week and I am planning on attending it,

New Westminster one also offers course but couldn't get any info right now, they have a meeting on Oct. 19

One in North Van has a course starting on January 14, and is put on by Glena's friend, I could get in touch with the instructor and see if he could do a course for us sooner.
here's the link with all the details

For those interested in a litte read there is some good information here on radio communications compiled by a local 4 wheeler, Greg Sue.

Follow the "4x4 Communications" link on this page

Attended Surrey amateur clubs meeting last night and found out absolutely nothing, two hours of my life I will never get back,

I will try New Westminster meeting on the 19th of this month and hopefully they might help us out .

I am aiming towards John White from N. Vancouver because Amateur Radio Courses is what he does in his spare time.

any thoughts or ideas?

thanks Rick, you wouldn't happen to have their # ?

North Van club won't put on a course unless they have 30 people.

Glena is going to contact some people she knows to find out if anyone can put on course for us.

Kris has it been established that there is going to be a vhf course or an amature radio course. I was talking to a fellow on the run sat, who has amature and he said that with ham license that there was no annual fee. with vhf there was a fee for the radio?? if you plan to run an amature {ham } course i would very much like to get that licence.. can you let me know please. thanks rick.m

Rick,

we are gearing up for Amateur radio operator license which is ham operator,
the frequencies we as off roaders are most interested in, is VHF in 2 m band,
and you are correct, once you are licensed there is no fee other than buying the radio.
the only time you would have to pay annual fee is when its for commercial use and you have your own frequency assigned to you.

I am talking to an instructor and by the sounds of it will have a course end of November , no details as of yet.
as soon as I know more I will let everyone interested know.

If the course is going to be run over weekends I would be interested in coming over from Paradise Island for the course. I'm hoping that someone would be willing to put me up. Or put up with me!!!!!!!! Whatever!!!!!!!!

Derek,

WARA (Westcoast Amateur Radio Assn) of Victoria is running a Basic + course starting this January. They have a really good group of experieced instructors with some rather awsome knowlege and experience. Contact Peter Richardson [email protected] and he will give you all the info you need. Or go see Al Muir at Muir communications on Douglas St.

Here's what I got:

The course would be done by John from E-Comm in Vancouver ,
it would start in February for about 4 Saturdays and fifth Saturday would be the test.
it costs $55 and you download your material of their web.

have a look @ http://www.vector.comm.sfu.ca/

would this accommodate everyone?
if not I can keep looking.
we can talk about this on our meeting this Thursday.

Hi Kris, Can we be specific about the Saturdays in February because I will be away in March for a couple of weeks, so I just want to make sure there isn't going to be any conflict.
Thanks, Bill
