Series 2 Water Temp Sensor Removal

#1 Post by oldgravy » Fri Feb 26, 2016 10:47 am

How the 'ell do you get the water temp sensor, line, and gauge off the truck? I can't seem to remove either end of the sensor cable, either at the gauge end or at the thermostat end.

How does the cable connect to the gauge? It's crimped, I assume, and I don't want to bust anything... so how is it removed?

How can you get a wrench in behind the rad to turn the nut holding the sensor cable into the thermostat? It's a biatch to get in there.

I'd really like to avoid busting something as it's 56 years old.

The water temp gauge line is factory fitted to the gauge. If you remove it it will be knackered. The bulb on the end of the long pipe fits into the opening close to the thermostat. You can remove the bulb and line from the truck but not the bulb/line etc from the gauge. The line contains alchohol or something similar so shouldn't be cut. To remove the sender bulb and line unscrew the hex fitting in your photo near the thermostat housing. It might be tight but should unscrew with a bit of effort and some spray penetrant.

The oil feed pipe/line can be unscrewed from the gauge as is yours,

Hi

If your temperature gauge is still working correctly be very careful when removing the pipe, gauge and sensor they are filled with ether. Do not kink the pipe. To get the sensor out you can use a old socket and cut a 1/2 inch notch in the side (( kind of like a wrench for doing brake lines) and weld the socket to a old wrench and remove it 1/8th of a turn at a time. Sorry I have no picture of this tool.
The only other alternate way I know of to gain enough room to get a wrench into that spot is to remove the thermostat housing completely including the outlet which connects to the large 1 and 1/2 inch radiator hose which goes down. I would really soak the 3 thermostat housing bolts with a good penetrating oil before attempting to remove them.

You can test the temperature gauge by putting the sensor in hot water with a thermometer in the water. Mine still works and it was built in 1962. I run a 82 C thermostat and the gauge is dead on.
The oil gauge will most likely need a new hose and luckily they are still available. If the gauge is no good you can buy a new complete unit or their is a company in the USA that rebuilds them but it costs more than new. The only reason I would do a rebuild was if the gauge actually says Land /Rover on the face. (These are really rare). The company does a beautiful job of it if you go that route. Send the old pipes along so they get the lengths correct.

Good luck.

Thanks, gentlemen! I had no idea it was filled with magical ether.

I was afraid I'd have to take the thermostat or the rad off to get to the bolt. Don't own an angle grinder (I know, right?) nor do I know how to weld, so it looks like more disassembly will be required.

No clue if the gauge works, either. The truck never ran for me, so...
