Oil Sump / Pan Sealant 300tdi - What else?

#1 Post by bf900 » Mon Nov 23, 2015 8:30 pm

Finally got around to removing the oil pan to investigate/ fix the persistent oil sweat...which was becoming worse. Once I started....I realized many of the bolts were not torqued / had become loose.

Q: What sealant do you all recommend to put this back together? Went to Lordco and they suggested the Black Permatex Silicone (Automotive Grade RTV) stuff....Is this good enough? if not, what should I use?

Now that I have the pan off...is there anything I should/ could be checking on the bottom end? It looks surprisingly clean.

Also going to do my rear diff - same question. Can I use this sealant or is there better stuff out there.

Thanks

Doc Tari

http://www.permatex.com/products/our-br ... ight-stuff

The Right Stuff - By far the best sealant l've ever found. It's used by many OEM's as well. Will work on your diff as well.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I was looking a bit closer today and noticed a few small sharp metal shards "stuck" on the oil pick up strainer mesh. I used a magnet to remove them...all small but very sharp pieces of metal. I have no idea of when / if ever the sump was off. My defender has close to 390k

Normal? reason to be concerned? any way to figure out where they came from?

Thanks

If you are doing your rear main seal at the same time, don't make the same mistake I did and replace your T seals on the #5 main bearing cap .I did not and my oil pan and rear main have to come out again ... Very frustrating indeed. Oh and right stuff is the way to go

So you are suggesting to do/ check the rear seal? Is there a way to see if its leaking or bad?

Does the crank have to come out or the gearbox down? both of which seem like a huge job..

Well if your rear main seal was leaking you'd probably know just by the Exxon Valdez like oil stain where you park... To do the rear main the transmission/transfer box and clutch/ flywheel has to come off, and if you are going to re seal the oil pan too you might as well renew the T seals as you are right there anyways ( just remove the rear most bearing cap and they fit in there
