OK, here's a few details. Saturday, April 2nd, 12:50 PM the logs on the BC Newspaper Group servers (my work) show an intrusion by a hacker, coming in through a vulnerability in a stats program, AWStats. As a result the hacker planted some sort of file, which became their back door to enter the system. The record in the logs shows that this intrusion came from Romania, although the actual hacker could be anywhere in the world and just relaying through Romania. An interesting website that is rather revealing about hackers is http://www.zone-h.org. Take a look at the list of hackers and attacks on this site.

By 1:30 Saturday, they had been able to wipe out about half the data on 6 different servers that work together to host about 100 websites, including our forums, calendar and photo gallery.

We discovered what was happening shortly after 1:30 and immediately shut everything down. The next 5 days was spent in round the clock recovery, with the two primary projects for the newspapers finally being up and running again by Thursday. A dozen or so secondary projects, including those of the Roverlanders, were put back up this week.

I still have to do some figuring out of our calendar, but other than that everything seems to be back.

Apologies to everyone who was inconvenienced, and those that have emailed me or ordered stuff in the last 10 days. I've been working around 100 hours a week, and it will take me a bit of time to catch up with life -- and sleep.

Dave
