My D2 alternator is getting old and loud and I just purchased a new winch. I figured it's a good time to upgrade.
The D2 alternator is 130A. I noticed the p38 alternator is 150A and it looks to me like the same thing.
does anyone know if this fits my D2. If not, any suggestions on a higher amp alternator.

Re: Land Rover discovery 2 alternator
More amps = more load
more load = more horsepower from engine going to drive alternator
more load = belt wearing out sooner
more load = alternator bearings wearing out sooner
My opinion, 130 Amps should be more than enough, even with a winch. It wasn't that long ago that the "standard" for north american alternators was 30-40 amps. I like the idea of 100+ amps to run all our accessories nowadays, but I just don't think you need anything over that as it's going to start affecting other things under the hood. I have a 130 amp stock alternator in my D2 and its never had a problem with keeping both Optima red-tops charged as well as maintaining several add-on accessories, including an inverter.
I would just replace the noisy 130 amp with another one, or take it to an auto-electric rebuilder and get them to replace the worn parts.
cheers, Dave
