Cowichan Valley Land |Rover Rally

#1 Post by Greg S » Sat Feb 25, 2012 11:01 pm

I've decided to do it again!

This will be the 10th annual Rally in the Valley.

June 9th and 10th, the weekend before Father's day, at the usual place, my backyard just north of Duncan. Details to follow except that the heavy off-road drive will be on Saturday and the social day on Sunday.

Thanks for hosting again, Greg. Got the old motorhome sorted out (wiring bloody wiring), so we'll be arriving in two gas-guzzlers :)

Cowichan Valley Land Rover Rally

#4 Post by island dormy » Mon Feb 27, 2012 7:37 pm

Hi Greg

I will be coming also. After all this is the 10th anniversary. I have also heard rumors that this may be the last year for the event. So to anybody who has participated before better come again. If you have always wanted to but just never made it this may be your last chance. Great things can not go on forever.
Remember its three action filled days and nights of nothing but Land Rover themed fun and adventures.
Check out Gregs web site at (Van Isle Landrover Network) for photos of past years rallies
See you in June

Thanks for the votes of support. I was thinking I wouldn't do one this year, but then I found myself buying prizes for it. Everything will fall into place from there.

I couldn't be more excited. Last year's Saturday drive was the best Land Rovering I have yet to do. I'll be there.

I'll be coming up this year with the whole family. Most likely we will be bringing my 1967 2a and our "new" Landy a 2006 LR3. Now to decide which one to take into the mountains!

Like I said, things are falling into place. I've been mowing the field to keep the grass nice. Awards have been bought. The current information is "up" on the Van Isle Web site. (www.vanislelandrovernetwork.com) We just have to get people to come out to it.

We have a poster to commemorate the rally this year. Looks like $6 each. Who wants to put dibs in on one?

is anyone not going on the saturday run. i was thinking of bringing our daughter but i was not sure shes ready to go on the drive at 2 years old. so we were thinking my wife can stay back at camp with her. maybe i am being a bit too careful but i was worried about her bouncing around a bit too much on a full day run especially if she falls asleep in her seat.

I'm hoping to get away for the drive at 10 AM Saturday morning, back about 4 PM. Victor and I did a test drive of the roads today. Twenty five kilometers, pavement to pavement took about 3 1/2 hours, add the planned stop for lunch at a riverside beach and a 4 PM return should be about right. We head off-road about 15 km from the farm and return even closer so about 50 kilometers max. Please note: there WILL be branch scratches, nothing major noted today. There ARE a few places where it is narrow and or low so go easy and use a spotter in about four places; we'll tell you where. There is one place where you are headed up a steep hill and can't see over the top before you have to make a sharp left turn. We'll warn you where this is. There are a couple places where you have two trees on one side and a stump on the other that you have to weave around. Note, a full size pick-up truck can do it but it is possible to bump the trees or stump, slow, easy and use a spotter. There are three places with a low overhead; two could be cut out if needed but Rob made it past all three in his 130 with the headache rack sticking above his truck cab. Your driving skill dictates the damage beyond branch scratches and one year we even had someone crash and bend stuff on the easy "no scratch" run.

It would be wise to NOT have a roof rack, and wider vehicles have to use more care/ skill.

Hoping to have a camp fire on the beach, so bring lunch and non alcoholic drinks.

Pot luck dinner Saturday night sounds like a good plan too. We've had one every other year!

Anyone need more information????

Reza, There will be people around on Saturday, Erica won't be going on the run and usually some of the trucks on the run have family members stay at camp. I expect some of the vehicles for the Sunday social time will be arriving Saturday.

Damn wheels for the summer tires aren't here yet: shipping mix up, they went elsewhere but are on their way to the west coast. Hopefully they arrive tomorrow. Maybe shouldn't have bought studded winters...

Well---"yes" we had a good time. (at least I did.)

The drive on Saturday went well, most spent the night and continued visiting thru breakfast, a no scratch drive, a BBQ lunch, Welly toss and awards ceremony.

A huge thanks to the Sutfin family and all who put this years rally on. My family had a great time and both boys feel fast asleep dreaming about mud, horses and Land Rovers no doubt! Can't wait for next years....... ;)
