2000 d2

#1 Post by troy » Sat Oct 01, 2011 1:41 pm

so i was going to change head gaskets today on the wifes 2000 d2 started getting into it and looks like the heads have been done recently and it looks like the front cover is leaking not the heads, but when i took off the intake it looks like the previous owner ( s ) never ever changed the oil in it , pulled a couple lifters and they have had it , so it needs a cam and lifters and i havent pulled the pan yet , the motor has several ticks but i marked them up to rocker gear but the rockers dont look too bad i checked the oil pressure this year and it was good, we bought it a few years ago and its been a good truck ,body is in good shape , new tires last year etc , but dont want to spend a million dollars on it , so what have the other discovery owners done when the mill in their unit needs rebuilt , if you buy a low miler you could be getting the same thing , and there is always the sleeve issue , so has anyone rebuilt one and how much $$$$ did it cost you in the end , any experiences or advice would be great , its not really worth anything like it is but is it worth repairing , sad thing is if it was my 62 i wouldnt think twice ...troy

3.9 V8

Hi Troy,

Yes, basically the NAS Defender had the same 3.9 V8 as the Range Rover Classic. They are all prone to head gasket issues, especially if over heated at some time.
The ticking is often tappets or loose sleeves but also exhaust manifold leaks can produce a clicking sound that often gets mistaken for something worse. Was your clicking worse on start up (cold engine) of worse when the engine gets hot?
Second hand used engines seem to be plentyful and cheap if you need replacement parts.
When you put it back toether there is an after market head gasket available that is apparenty 10 times better than the original
Good luck,
Andy

its all apart , the heads were not leaking and looks like they were done just before we purchased it , the amount of sludge in the cam valley is bad and the heads are as clean as they were when they were new , pulled the front cover because the leak was coming from the driver side inlet to the block took the oil pump apart it looks great , after taking the gears out of the front cover i noticed on the inside gear has a arrow on it does this matter were it goes when its reassembeled , ( timing mark of some kind ? ) so new timing chain set of lifters and head gaskets , hopefully issues solved , it was ticking really good after it was warm , but all the sleeves look like they are were they are supposed to be ( from the top and bottom ), the thing ran good besides that , it was just dripping alot of coolant on the ground this last week from the cover leak , what i have found interesting is the lifters on the driver side have not been turning and have a single wear spot in them from the cam , looking at the cam all the lobes look o.k. non missing , i know one thing for sure if you paid a shop to do this it wouldnt be cheap ... troy

Generally $4,000 - $4,500. I'm doing the heads myself next time.

I've read that the ARP head studs are the way to go, as they're way better than the stock head bolts. Anyone have any experience with these?

Not sure where to get them in BC, but Toddco has a good description:
