WABDR and Overland Rally

Through the middle of Washington State is an off-pavement trail called the "Washington Backroad Discovery Route"

About midway is Ellensberg where nearby the 2011 Overland Rally will be held starting July 27 http://www.overlandrally.com/Overland_R ... hwest.html which Dave B has mentioned in another post.

A group from the Northwest Overland Society is planning to drive the WABDR from the southern point "The Bridge of the Gods" to the Overland Rally staring July 23rd.

If there is enough interest perhaps we could get a group to do the trail from the Canadian side starting at Chopaka south of Keremeos. We would probably start on the Sunday July 24 and arrive in time for the Overland Rally.

youtube has videos of the route if you are interested just search on "WADBR". It should be easy going and fun for all including families.

I will be heading down in the 110, and a couple of guys from the Expedition Portal are going as well. Should be pretty fun.
James from Hammarhead Motorbikes will be showing off the new Jack Pine there, and Overland Journal will be giving out some Swag.

We have five vehicles preparing for the trip from the North and four from the south.

We will be finalizing a date and meeting point over the next week but the temtitive plan is to begin the trail on Sunday July 24th crossing into the US at the Chopaka/Nighhawk border crossing.

Anyone else interested?

We plan on leaving Vancouver in the morning of the 23rd, arriving at the Overland Rally on Wednesday. Your choice if you want to hang around/pay for any of the festivities. We'd planned on just finding our own way home from there because some have commitments for the following weekend and some don't.

Ok so I've booked off the week and am planning to tag along and also attend the Overland Expo.

I'm going to bring Rudy (dog) and have read up on the documents he requires.

Now for some questions....

Seeing as I do most of my camping north of the 49th...what can I not bring down in regards to camping foods, beer, liquor, etc...

I cannot seem to find much on-line other than...

We regret that it is necessary to take agricultural items from your baggage. They cannot be brought into the United States because they may carry animal and plant pests and diseases. Restricted items include meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, soil, and products made from animal or plant materials.

So the big question is how to pack supplies for 4 days on the trail?

Any advice on this?

Food - fresh fruits and vegetables, and all meats are likely to be confiscated.

Dog food - Providing its in its original bag so they can read the label, and the bag only contains roughly the amount required for the days you plan on being down there, they will let it through.

I usually just leave the cooler empty and shop down there, as food prices are a lot cheaper anyway.

Also make sure all the dog's shots are up to date, especially the rabies as they watch for that.

Now for the rest of the group...seeing as the plan is to cross at the Nighthawk crossing, where would we resupply. From what i understand there are only 5 people living there :shock:

The plan is, oh ya no plan, after that find the trail, drive, get lost, find trail, enjoy the views, drive.......................... exit somewhere around Ellensberg, checkout or not, the Overland Rally and go home.

PS I am not the trail leader our fearless leader is in Prince George, we are on our own.

Hi All

Just this past week I received the time off. The boss took a month to decide.

I now have the week off, on top my vacation booked from last fall.

Plan to leave Delta, 22 Friday 16.30 & stop & Manning Park, overnight Lighting Lake. Camp sites still open @ Lighting Lake.

Then on to a rendezvous @ north end of Palmer Lake Wash at the picnic area around 2pm

Not that far of a drive into Oroville from Nighthawk/Palmer Lake, you might want to get your groceries there as there's really not very many significant towns south of that for a day or two.

Sooooo. After deciding to bring Esther (the Bedford) on the trip from BC to Ellensberg I hear you've jammed out; that true? I was hoping to do it in the Lightweight but Bill showed up Saturday; surveyed the disaster that is Hermione unplugged and said I'd never get it ready in time.

He arrived just after my discovery of the effects of not jigging a structure before doing significant welding! I'd narrowed the lightweight a further 3/4" which made assembly a challenge.

Anyway sorry you're not coming; I looked at the videos and think we'll make it in the monster but I'll take an axe and chainsaw just in case.

Just a heads up, a new permit went into force July 1st in Washington for state parks and many back road areas. It's call the Discovery Pass and can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. Details here:

I looked at the exemptions list and unfortunately out-of-state visitors are not exempt, so you might want to buy one before you get too far into the back country. We had to do the same in Oregon a couple of years back.

If anyone wants to go to the Rally but can't do the full backcountry route, I am now going to cross at Sumas on Wednesday and just do a one-day drive down via the highway.

We didn't get back to BC from our 3-week US trip until Friday night, and I needed a couple of days to do laundry and do some minor truck adjustments... hence I didn't meet up with the gang on Saturday as I had originally hoped to do.

So if anyone wants to convoy down on Wednesday, let me know.
