I noticed a few weeks ago while on hwy 1 that for a few seconds my engine lost somewpower but then was fine a few seconds later. Then as time went on this happened more frequently. Finally after heading home from Coal Harbour last week after the engine was well warmed up it cut out three times. Finally after the final stoppeage it backfired LOUD. Even though I have my foot on the accelorator the power just fizzles away. It is as though the hand throttle is slowly being pushed in . It is usually hard to start back up afterwards.
I have been told it could be my condensor and/or points and/or plugs/wires. or even timing/carb adjustment. Does this seem right or any other suggestions on what it could be. I think I remember hearing very quiet backfiring when coming down hills but it was hard to tell as the rover is loud enough enough already, lol.
thanks for any help ahead of time...

Back-firing....
Hi Jason,
The most common cause of back firing is un-burnt fuel getting through to the exhaust system.
So what you need to do is find out why its not burning effiently. I would start by looking at your spark at your contact point inside the distributor cap. (turn the engine over without the distributor cap on & you should see a good spark between the contacts as they open & close).
If the spark is good, then the next thing to do is check the spark at each spark plug. (I normally remove a spark plug & with the lead still attached hold the tip of the plug a 1/16" off the enging block & turn over the engine) You should see a good bright spark jump accross the gap from the spark plug to the engine block. (keep your fingers clear!)
Its sound like your problem is intermittant (comes & gos) so you may see good spark when testing but the spark is lost when the engine loses power when running.
I had a very similar problem with my series truck, it turned out to be a faulty distributor cap! But on saying that it could be the cap, the rotor arm, the leads, the plugs, the coil....all could be giving you a weak spark sometimes & a good spark at other times...
Have you checked the small wire conections on your coil (prone to coming loose) Also its worth checking your small vacumn tube (from your distributor) is not kinked, squashed or full of dirt!.
Good luck, let us know how you get on,
Andy

will do Andy and....
I am going to buy new points, condensor, plugs, ignition wires and rotor (ignition coil is new) and install them all on Monday night. What are the gaps supposed to be for the spark plugs and the points? Also when I take the old stuff out of the distributor, I guess putting the new stuff in is just follwed in the reverse order?
I have no garage so I will be doing it in my local IGA so I want to be sure of what I am to do properly so I can be sure I will be driving it out of the parking lot that night.
all and any help appreciated,
jason
ps thanks andy
