After reading many posts about Land Rover imports on this and other forums, there seems to be 4 popular ways for Canadians to get a Rover over here:
1. Container to east coast, then train
2. Container to west coast
3. Roll On - Roll Off to Montreal/Halifax
4. Roll On - Roll Off to Tacoma
Of the 4, I've gotten the impression that when it goes to the east coast there seems to be huge amounts of additional costs in customs/cartage/inspections/washings, etc. compared to Tacoma or container to Vancouver.
Has anyone that's actually brought one in found this, or is it just an impression I'm getting from reading web forums?
thanks, Dave
Where did your imported Rover come in?

container
Hi Dave
When I brought my lightweight in via container to Vancouver, it was still held in Montreal for inspection. Fortunately I had a certificate for power washing from the UK company which they accepted and never opened or unloaded the container. However they still charged a fee - about $250 I believe.
Once in Vancouver I got a call that it was here on a Thursday. If I couldn't arrange for pick up on Friday there was going to be storage charges incurred. It is like the CN have them arrive late in the week so they can dig a little deeper into your wallet. Fortunately I have a friend who works in the business and called in a favour with one of the trucking companies.
Cheers

July 2002 - a LR90/LR110 were shipped to Montreal from L Jackson & Co , Bawtry UK [ in a container , shrunk wrapped , tied down and were futher restrained by 8 old farm tractor tires ] . When in Montreal , the container was loaded onto a train destined for VCR . When the container did arrive in Montreal , my customs broker called me of my container's arrival from the UK [ cleared ] and the subsequent loading of it onto a VCR bound train ; the container was not opened in Montreal . The total elapsed shipping time [ UK-VCR was 5 1/2 weeks ] . When the container was received at Annacis Island , I was contacted ... all the paper work was in order and the vehicles were steam cleaned [ 250.00 per ] and driven home with temporary permits .
Notes :
The customs broker fees were minimal [ a rounding error with respect to the total cost .. cost of the vehicle + shipping ] .
Shipping costs quoted by L Jackson & Co were from Bawtry UK to Annacis Island BC ; no additional charges were incurred .
Surprise ... the 8 old farm tractor tires were mine ... additional costs were incurred here to haul these 8 monsters to a tire recycling location . What is funny is that the 90/110 were steam cleaned due the mad cow scare in 2002 [ thank you for the 250.00 per ] , however the 8 farm tractor tires coverd in farm dirt / cow & pig manure were my problem .
