Snow Flake Chase - Sunday 10th Jan. 2010

Its been a tradition to have a club run on the Sunday after Founders day, namely the Snow Flake Chase which is a local run where we head out to enjoy the Mountain Air and get to crunch some snow under the Land rover tyres!
This year we have scouted out a couple of runs in the Chilliwack area and have come up with some fun trails.

Meeting Time will be Sunday Jan.10th at 9am at Tim Hortons at the Whatcom road exit of highway 1. Planning to depart by 9.30am sharp. We plan to be back on the ashphalt by 4pm.

Off road / All Terrain tyres recommended, also a tug strap and a tug strap points front and back of your truck.
Bring lunch (or a Sandwich from Tim Hortons) coffee, kids, wife! (if you can find one!)
A shovel and tyre chains if you have them.

Sounds good Andy, I'll be there with bells on and I am out at Canadian Tire looking for the Wife thingies you mentioned, do you hook them to the front toe hook or the back one??

Andy do you know if we will come out the same way we go in or do a loop and come out somewhere else? I am gonna bring the 110 on a trailer so ideally I want to make sure I come out where I go in.

Good to see you getting out, I hear a rumour there may be two LR3's along....that will be a first! (you can swap parts!)

Yes, we will come out where we went in. if you are bringing the tank tracks then maybe we will get to the top of the mountain this time! Just have to chain us all up behind you :shock:

Andrew, you can strap-on where ever you like! If you cant find the wife then bring someone else's :wink:

The Snow Flake like all our drives are open to all vehicles :D I managed to get my FJ drivin buddy to join the Rover Landers :P

Two LR3's wow but then again now that we are old and replaced with the New LR4 I guess we can laugh at them for a change...LOL... actually be nice to see another one out there, see if the auto lockers make a real diff assuming the other doesn't have them. Swapping parts is a great idea, maybe the entire electrical system, what is it with LR and their electrical systems, I still get the odd total system shut down....Ghosts in the machine!

Well u LR3 types all have a center locking diff of the infinitely variable auto locking variety. :)

And it does make a difference with the rear locker - generally in the ability to bring less momentum/speed to the specific obstacle or situation. 8)

I was planning to come out, but the "offroad tires" thing scares me a little. I've been unable to locate a good set and wheels to use for offroad, so am currently running winter tires. :(

Also, being the other LR3 and also new to the group, I'm not sure I'm ready for the LR3 bashing that I've heard tends to happen (and was alluded to in this thread).

I like my truck, true it has lots of electrical systems and depends more on them than the older ones, but it is still a Land Rover. Not sure how members who say they love the Land Rover vehicles could be so cruel to owners of one. At the Xmas dinner, one fellow asked me what LR I drove, and when I said the LR3 was told "seriously, that's not a LR. What do you drive?" <sigh>

Ah well, I'll be at the AGM and also the gathering afterwards. Guess that will help me to decide whether I want to attend on Sunday or any functions...:wink:

Got the winter tires and chains all around so we'll see how that does. Still looking for mudders and steel rims but not untill the spring.

Hopefully Jon any ribbing was meant in fun. The LR3 is an awesome machine, and if I could afford one it would be in the drive next to my 110, and the Ford would be history. I have been amazed at slopes the LR3 has climbed with little effort that the rest of us struggled with.

Your truck on snow tires (which will be better than off-road tires in all likelihood) will likely be one of the best performers on Sunday so I wouldn't worry about it.

I dont think I can make it on Sunday, I rented a truck and a trailer but the two do not seem to be compatible. (Anyone have a truck with a 7500 pd towing capacity that wants to swing by and collect me on Sunday morning?)

I managed to hire a flatbed for Saturday though, so the tank will be at the AGM.

Hmmm, my LR3 tows 7700 max. I'm setup to pull a trailer that hits slightly under 7300 and it does fine. I'm thinking that 7500 is getting a little close to the red line, and that doesn't leave much room for safety margins...

Where would "here" be if we decided to give this a shot? ;) Do you know what the tongue weight is on the trailer?

True winter tires will likely do you better than off-road tires in snow. We've had every type of tire and truck you can imagine on Snowflake chases over the years. And no one has ever been left behind.

Don't hesitate to come out and play.

Roger, we will be on Channel 4 CB, we will be passing through Yarrow about 09:45 so that would be a good place to meet if you are not going to be at Tims on Hway 1.
If there are any updates after Founders day, I will be posting them here tonight.

6800 is doable, as long as the tongue weight is under 770...

I'll chat with my wife on the way out to the event today. You said you'd have the "tank" with you today, so I'll be able to identify you fairly easily. ;) We'll talk today about it.

I think it might be fairly cool to have a Land Rover tow the tank-ized Land Rover. Would make for an early early day though (we are coming from Richmond)... lol On the other side, I'd love to have a ride in a tank-treaded LR, that opportunity doesn't present often.

Where would we store the trailer while both vehicles are "playing" in the snow?

David, if you can get to our meeting spot there is always spare seats available.

This run is a fun, easy going trail, dont worry about damaging your trucks!
Any tricky obstacles can be bypassed or taken slow enough that there will not be damage.
