Ferry Fair

#1 Post by JD » Mon Sep 28, 2009 9:32 pm

Was pleasantly surprised this week to find my 110 with the Rocky Mtn roof rack was not measured as overheight on Bennet's Navy on either the Victoria, Nanaimo or Langdale routes.

Ferry

Heh heh - you got off lucky. They tagged my disco with rack and roof top tent as overheight. Also wouldn't allow me to load with my 2 empty fuel tanks on roof. I had to give one of the tanks to another driver (who managed to get on the ferry while I was held back because of space!). Luckily I got the number of the guy and picked up the tank on the island...quite an adventure for a simple ferry ride.

Yeh JD, you did get off lucky, they often measure my 90 even though it is usually under-height, and the fuel can thing is a real pain in the arse. Like it makes the ship any safer by splitting the empties between you and the vehicle behind or in front of you. Of course they give you the ridiculous option of filling the empties with water so they are no use for either purpose!

Rack'em up

Geez didn't even think about the gerry can!! It sits inside the saddle compartment on my MOD 110 so they wouldn't know to look. .. And the roof rack was empty. The toll booths have an infra red sensor now so the booth gooof can't use his bad judgement or give you a hard time. If the alarm goes off your tagged if not your in. I took 6 ferries last weekend with no hitch... gotta get one of those one day...

hitch that is..
swimin pools,
movie stars....

Cheers all.

Hey JD, I drove past you in vic the other day, you must be within an inch of the overheight sensor...

always gets me po'd when I ring that bell. " you must pay double now because you're parking on a different deck."

but it's the same fricken ferry....

Length is a fun one too. because they have to either take your word for it, or get out with the measuring wheel, and if it's dark, rainy, or the booth beeatch is rotund, they tend to not bother..

I have a 40' sailboat trailer...total length with a boat on it + truck is upwards of 60' ....so I tend to round down a touch when talking to them...

once paid $250 bucks to get on the ferry with that getup.

Different deck? What ferry are you going on? When I get dinged for overhieght I usually end up on the same upper deck as if I'd been in the Civic? The upper car deck has about 10-12 foot clearance too.

I think about 2 inches under. Though Greg is right once on there's lots of room above no matter what deck. A head tax left over from the ealy days of Beenet's Navy where the baots were stolen from Noah's davits. No doubt.

Hope to see you all on the 10th.

well, yeah usually you end up in the same spot, but there's a couple of those boats with low ass decks. was on one a while back in my cruiser, which is underheight, and I was only a few inches from the sprinkler fittings above me.

(most of which had scrapes and gouges in the pipes leading to them from being hit...)

the 10th eh.... we shall see...did I mention I hate doing exhaust?
