fuel gauge not working

#1 Post by larry emrick » Fri Jun 20, 2008 8:26 am

The fuel gauge on my series 3 swb has stopped working. I topped the tank up to make sure and have checked the connections on the sender unit but all the needle will do is flutter wildly on and around the empty mark. Will it be the sender unit, or gauge, that is at fault. Any suggestions appreciated, and if I have to get at the gauge how big a deal is it to get at it? Thanks, Larry

I would first suspect a loose connection in the wiring.

Turns out to have been a faulty fuse, which is what I checked first. It was not burned out, however, but when the oil pressure gauge stopped working as well I went back and check them all and found one that did not look right. I changed it and another one as well and the gauges started working as soon as I turned the key. A cheap lesson in doubled-checking the little things first.
