Assuming that the vehicles from 98-03 have been maintained per recommended service intervals , in your opinion which model year would you folks recommend buying , and which would you steer clear of [ barring price ] ?

I suppose one of the first questions to ask yourself is how the vehicle is going to get used. Is it going to be taken off road -- lightly? serious off road? Is it more of a grocery getter and for trips with the wife? Is it for the wife to drive?

I would be inclined to look at a pre 98 (Series I disco) if I intended to use the off-road technology built in as it is shorter at the back and some of the newness (interpreted $$) has rubbed off. As well, so long as it has been dealer serviced it's likely that most major problems have been uncoverd and dealt with by now. I would still look for an extended warranty, though.

If it is for on road use only, I would look towards leasing a brand new one and maybe write it off as a home business expense?!?

There are alot of 96 - 97 Discos showing up on the used lots right now in the price range of $11-$19,000. I would say 12-14 would get you a great example.
