I was speaking to Hannibal Safari Equipment in South Africa this
morning. My contact there has just returned from the Aid and Trade
conference in Geneva, which was also attended by Land Rover.
During a discussion with a LR SVO employee, he was informed that LR
is CURRENTLY testing a current model Defender equippped with
airbags, internal roll cage, etc., which they have built
specifically for the North American market. The SVO staffer claims
it will be available here in late '04, possibly early '05.
Anyone else hear anything about this??? I know rumours in this area
are frequent and often unfounded, but this seems to have some stock
to it.
Interesting Rumour...

Steven,
There has been talk from Landrover rep's about North America getting
a CKD (Complete Knockdown Kits) defenders. This would be there way
of getting around some red tape! Importing parts/kits and assembling
in US means less stringent rules as opposed to import complete
vehicles.
Check out autoweek.com and or carconnection.com and search for
Landrover.
Later,
Don
P.S. Are you coming out on Saturday?

Regarding 110 defender. In the states the dealers have the info on
the CDK 110 available this year? We don't know when. The come with a
built chasis and 40 boxes to assemble. The will have 6 to 8
designated assembly locations. They are going to be priced about
45,000 USD.
They will have electric Windows and all the bells whistles including
AC.
The debuted this at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

I've seen the CKD information from SEMA. However, the word I hear from my LR contacts is that LR was showing the kits at SEMA and Aid & Trade in Geneva as a talking point to generate interest at their displays.
A cursory read of web available legislation and government working papers suggests that the importation of kits will not be a suitable route. Seems if the vehicle is imported as a kit it is considered manufactured and must meet DoT regulations.
This is one time when I'd be happy to be wrong, as any increased availabiliy of these vehicles would be more than welcomed :)
