I have two speedometer gears. One from a 1:4 LT230 and one from a 1:2 LT230.
The teeth on each of these gears are different. The aperature for the speedometer cable/sender is a little different too.. not much but there none the less. The 1:2 sender has more/smaller teeath and a small aperature - just a hair too small for the speedo cable; while the 1:4 sender has fewer teeth/larger teeth and will fit the speedo cable.
Has anyone else experience with this area? Trying to fit a defender mechanical speedo cale to a disco LT230.

I'm no expert. I suspect Andrew knows.
The different teeth count is based on tire size. The Disco one is for 29" tires and the Defender for 32". Obviously the gear ratios in the transfer cases have nothing to do with shaft speed at the speedo.
The aperture change is an older/later thing and I'm not sure where the change happened.
Do they look like they can swap?

The disco LT230's that I've worked with all had an electronic speedo sender that fit into the same hole as the mechanical one. I used a disco electronic sender along with a VDO speedo in my 90 so that I could calibrate it to what ever size tires or gears I use.
As for your problem all I can say is that the disco unit fits a defender 1.667 LT230 fine but I haven't tried it the other way around.

Givin' Gears
So if I stuff the larger toothed sender gear into the Disco LT230 all should be fine? Certainly seems to go in, but I can't tell what's happening with the little gears. I have the electronic unit in that came out of the 230 but didn't want to go to an electronic speedometer on the 110. Did early Discoverys have a speedo cable v.s. and electronic sender?
