Hello Rafe,
I'm just back in NL from a 4 week holyday on Vancouver island, The parks I can reccomend tou you are http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/explore.html
We stay in Strathcona Park, on the Buttle lake, very nice, there is a little playground for your kid, but also on Little Qualicum Falls, Englishman River, and more in the middle of Vancouver Island.
A nice road is the logging road from Lake Cowichan to Port Alberni.
The best thing to do is buy the Vancouver Island BC Backroad Mapbook, available in most of the VI bookstores. You will find the 4x4 roads in that book.
Unfortunately, I couldnt bring my Landy, I had to rent a F*ck*ng Jeep....
Best regards from the Netherlands,
Hans

Sorry I missed this post before you were planning on coming over here. There are a number of places. Lake Cowichan offers some FS and Gov't campsites and a bit farther West is Kissinger Lake with a semi wilderness campsite. All are close to many miles of active as well as unused logging roads. Shawnigan Lake area has several campsites and is a popular off-road area with some nice challenging trails just for 4X4 and ATV's. None of the local clubs will tell you exactly where the trail heads are but they are out there to find. Copper Canyon, west of Chemainus has no official camp areas but lots of roads to drive.
My favorite area, Mount Sicker, has been recently logged but most of the roads have been bombed out to prevent access.
I see a post on the open site about Huckleberry trail. It is one of several that are close to Weeks lake, generally refered to as "Shawnigan".
Good luck.
