ABS idiosyncrosies

#1 Post by chilliwack » Wed Jul 18, 2007 10:21 pm

I'm having some odd behavior with my ABS.

I have just completed a 2" OME lift, new front brakes, turned the rotors, and repacked the hubs on a 96 Disco.

I've just switched to 245/75 R 16 tires as well

If I pull straight away with minimum turning, the ABS light goes out like it is suppose to. If I do a lot of slow speed backing and turning immediately after starting, it doesn't go out.

If I stop and turn off the ignition, restart, and drive away, it goes out immediately.

Braking seems fine at speed and ABS seems to function normally on mixed surfaces.

ABS will cycle occaisonally at low speed when turning tightly

Any thoughts before I take it to a specialist?

ABS sensors.....

Hi,
I am no ABS expert but I am guessing that during your suspension / brake work you have loosened a ABS sensor wire or the sensor itself. I would check all wiring & connectors on the inside of your wheels. Lift up the front of the vehicle, take a front wheel off and get a friend to turn the steering full left & right while you observe if any ABS wiring is getting pulled / tugged / rubbed on.
If all the wiring is fine then you may of knocked a ABS sensor slightly out of adjustment. These can be gentle tapped back into alignment through mostly a trial and error and a little luck.
Check your manual on the subject of ABS wheel sensor adjustment to see what they recommend.
Good luck,
Andy :D
