I have 2 spare beds and a couch downstairs if anyone wants to stay
over in Abbotsford Saturday night. You'll probably get put to work
helping load stuff back and forth to Cloverdale, though...

Let me know.

On the contrary David. Thank you very much for sending it. Very
interesting
and useful information and point of view.

Glad to have received it in error. Are you thinking of coming to the
Island
in June again this year for our third annual Land Rover get together?

Derek, you're still going aren't you? I'm hoping you are as I wanted to
catch a ride and share a hotel room. Steve, are you still planning on
the
trip and sharing hotel accommodation? Victor gets back just a couple
days
before so isn't sure anymore if he will need a ride or if he will sit
this
one out. Jim? Any word of you going? I think a few "up Islanders"
should be
convinced to go as well. If someone like 100% of the Island Gypsy
club were
to show up, I'm sure they would be welcome too.

The evening starts with the Rover Landers AGM followed by a social
evening
browsing through the collection of vehicles everyone brought. There
is food
and drink available, raffles and peoples choice awards, things to buy
and
parts "tailgate" sales. Generally a balance platform or incline

returning this year. Last year we stayed at a hotel just a few miles
from
the Cloverdale site and are quite happy to return to the same hotel.

        Hello All;
It's near the end of the year, time
to place a few
thoughts, read them at your peril!
I would like to thank the Land Rover 'gang' for all
their
help over the past year.  My project gets closer to completion every
week.  Soon enough it'll be on the road, or, better yet, on the 'off-
road'.  Saturday afternoons, rather than spent under the damn thing,
shall be spent roaming the backwoods of Nanaimo where I played as a
lad with all my 'Toy' truck friends 'way back in the late seventies
and early eighties.  I am aware that things have changed with
reference to access, but there's still a lot of roads to be ranged
back there.  Apparently you can still climb Mt. Benson, you just have
to go in via Northwest Bay road.  Sounds like a worthy challenge to
me!  Any takers?  Probably during early summer.  I'll keep y'all
posted.  There's another one I'm looking into up the back side of Mt.
Horne; I've hiked it and it is WAY cool, up on the spine of the
Island, you can see ocean on both sides, plus Cameron Lake on one
side, Horne Lake on the other.  Tres spectacular.
Well, it's been an interesting year, lots of ups
and a few
downs to balance it out.  Hope the New Year finds you all healthy and
happy.  Don't forget your designated drivers tonight and tip them
well.

               Take it easy

The problem with a sweeping statement like this, is that ALL old Land
Rovers have rusted frames. Yeah, I know, that's a sweeping statement
too. lol
But, it does seem true, at least for unrestored trucks of course.

My SIII had a frame that was more or less divided into four or five
pieces,
held together by rust. Some easily obtained and reasonably priced
replacement bits, and a couple of appointments with a local welder, and
we're back in business. It really wasn't a big deal. That was 6 years
ago,
and things are still solid.

>D. Don't get a Series one. Series trucks in general are just 'fancy
>tractors' - series ones are not fancy.

I agree that they aren't fancy. But what Series Land Rover is? Everyone
that I know with an SI, absolutely loves them.

>Series threes have a fancier dash - read
>they are harder to restore to nice.

Hmmm....pretty weak negative point. I'm totally happy with my 73 SIII.
(Although, I have a friend who seems intent on making my dash less-
fancy,
so it's less of a concern now. lol. Watch the list, I'm gonna hear about
THAT comment.)

>Hard and fast rules I have are this - If you can't keep them all
(all the
>vehicles that you own) running and nice, you own too many.

Agreed. At least for me. I don't want to become a Land Rover
recycling depot.
Now, if it was a Ferrari.......

>Why do, if you don't mind me asking, why do you want a Land Rover?
I mean,
>there are so many other really interesting vehicles that are easier
to get
>parts for; more 'highway' drivable and easier to get into a
community of.

I've found that it's as easy to get SIII parts, as it is to get parts
for
my Ford Escort. Easier in some cases. And DEFINITELY cheaper for the
Land
Rover parts.

Getting into the Land Rover community was simple. No shortage of
friendly,
enthusiastic owners. And for Van Isle, we have a web site, a forum, the
annual two-day meet, groups of us go off-roading together, we enter car
shows as a group, we meet for coffee now and then, and we're happy to
get
together to fix each other's trucks. What else would a new owner need
for a
support system?

Every time I drive my SIII, it's on the highway. Every time. Without
overdrive. No problem. Stay in the slow lane, leave lots of space, and
leave a bit early. I even get to pass people occasionally. (And not just
street-cleaners.) I have a decent interior, and it's quiet enough that I
could listen to a radio, which I will do when I get tired of
listening to
the happy symphony of healthy mechanical noises coming from the old,
non-rebuilt 2.5. (Never.)

And the damn thing is so robust and forgiving. I've never owned a more
reliable vehicle. I know that everyone has different experiences with
EVERY
vehicle, but mine is astounding. When I first got it, I drove it up and
down the highway for 6 months on three cylinders. I just didn't know.
Yeah,
I'd notice now, but then I had no basis for comparison, and it wasn't
making any kind of fuss. I could give you a list of things that I've
found
that would have stopped a regular car in it's tracks. Some of them my
fault, some the fault of previous owners. But none of them actually
stopped
the truck. And, other than the usual wearing-out bits (brakes, etc),
every
part that I've replaced has been 32 years old. Not bad. No complaints
here.

As far as "more interesting vehicles" go, I literally can't go anywhere
without people coming up and talking to me about the truck. It's great,
everyone has a story. I had a super old British lady (90's maybe?)
come up
and tell me "When I was a young girl in Africa, we used to have a Land
Rover. We would drive it fast, and the Masai would bump their heads
on the
roof."

I challenge anyone with a Bronco to get a story like that. And I hear
that
kind of thing ALL THE TIME.

Jim
Happy SIII owner. (That looked at Jeeps, Land Cruisers, and Broncos
before
making the right decision.)

Actually, I think you raised some really good points. It's fun to debate
this kind of thing.
Topics like this can start a great thread.

Dan, and perhaps your significant other.

I was trying to give you honest advice re your own guidelines that
you laid
out - and others seemed not to hear;

1. you did not want to do a restoration from a derelict vehicle - good
thinking.
2. you did not need something really nice (I imagine because you
don't have
10K+ to buy it).

So hear are a few guidelines -
A. a rusted frame is a useless vehicle - the time/cost involved in
doing a
frame swap will be more than a nice vehicle. If the frame is well
rusted,
the wiring is bad, the mechanicals will need to be gone over - the
materials
costs alone are just leaching! I usual value my own time at 1/2 what
I can
get paid to do something. I charge $30 an hour for painting or
anything else
I do on a vehicle - cheap, eh?
B. 88"s are better off road, 109's are more usable for travel and
carrying
stuff/people - I have one of each.
C. Look for the 'situation' that you want to buy a vehicle. What I
mean is
that what would be happening for you to think it is a good deal; someone
getting a divorce and really needing to sell their near to running Land
Rover for example. There is a fellow in Edmonton with just such a
truck -
wanting 3500.
D. Don't get a Series one. Series trucks in general are just 'fancy
tractors' - series ones are not fancy. I would tell you to aim for a
65-68
series IIA - up to a late IIA (70). Series threes have a fancier dash
- read
they are harder to restore to nice.

Now this advice is for collectable vehicles in general.
I will tell you, bar none, RUST is the thing that is hardest to repair
properly and will suck up more time than anything else. I metal finish
rusted parts when possible. I have seem parts that looked a little rusty
come back from the acid strippers (which eats only oxidized metal) with
holes all over and become unsalvageable. I galvanize all pieces on a
vehicle
that are steel and possible to galvanize - on a Land Rover that means
the
frame, bulkhead and core support to start with. My wife's 2CV I built
from
the frame up - the galvanized frame; and bumpers and rims and floor
panels.
Next, the interior and 'golden parts' must be there. If you notice
gauges,
lights, chrome missing, they are usual hard to get parts that others
pilfered off of the vehicle you are looking at.
The closer to original, the easier it will be to make running
properly. I
spent two years looking for my 404 Unimog - I knew, from looking, that I
wanted a Swiss variant. I found mine in Alberta, after looking at
trucks in
CA, OR, WA and BC. Mine had 0 rust. 32000KM and was complete except
for the
original tool rack (which I still have not gotten).
Find the 'situation' that will allow you to get the vehicle you want
in the
condition you want. You can read more about this below.

I think that you should try your best to make it to Founders Day - it
would
set you up with valuable contacts and show you some (perhaps 60) Land
Rovers. I am planning to be there. My truck will be loaded as I am
off to go
camping in Alberta for two weeks in January!
http://www.roverlanders.bc.ca/
Join Roverlanders and the Pacific Coast Rover Club - that will be the
best
$50 you spend for contacts. Most guys who are old enough, do not sell
over
the Internet. They tend to follow this rule; I do buy and sell over the
Internet BUT, note, this is the strong but, the cool/interesting/rare
stuff
is only sold to people in person. Like I have a couple NOS Smiths clocks
that fit really nice in Land Rovers, original heater motors, rare grill
badges, a couple dozen of the rarest gauges.... stuff like that, I
sell to
people I get to 'know'. People who buy Land Rovers the first time,
have a
better than 50% chance of selling within two years - better than 70%
within
5 years. I have been involved in the Land Rover community for near 20
years
now and have seen this time and time again.

I know a few things about Land Rovers. My own longest owned Series
IIA 88";
BEAN TOAD" has been driven over 100,000 miles since I put her on the
road 10
years ago, nearly 30,000 of those miles were done in 98 during the
50th. I
got my truck running without opening the original engine after
sitting for
14 years. It still has it's original engine, transmission, TC, front
diff
and an OD I have 70,000 miles on. I know a few things about painting
- every
LR I have painted (and has gone to shows) has won a first place.
http://www.roverlanders.bc.ca/faq/LRpaintMain.html

I do all my own work, from painting to upholstery, from fabricating to
assembly and customization - I also use my vehicles. I have over two
dozen
published Land Rover articles - and am considered by others who know
me as a
maintenance wacko. I have participated in the Land Rovers Northwest
Challenge and the open class Twin Teams Challenge, both pretty
extreme off
road events.  I also appear to others as a real Land Rover enthusiast
- I
am, a real vehicle enthusiast! We currently have in the stables (to
mention
the interesting ones); a 67 Mercedes 250, rare with the same suspension
system as the Gullwing, fitted for an 18 month trial period only; a 71
Mercedes 404 Unimog; a 63 Citroen 2CV, rare Belgium model; 67 NADA
109 that
is my only project, being built as an Australian Six RHD 109 and a 56
GMC
bus that we towed the 2CV with to a show in Boston, then a show in
Halifax
(where I took a first with the bus and second with the 2CV), did 10,000
miles (bus) 1,200 (2CV) in 40 days. If you are younger - 16,000KM
with the
bus. For the record, I am 42 and have owned over 100 vehicles.

Now, keep in mind, I am not some Land Rover wacko. In fact, I have owned
only 5 series trucks and two RR from the Land Rover group. Really, I
am a
vehicle wacko though; Land Rover Series trucks represents less than
5% of
the vehicles I have owned!

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sailori38/my_photos

Hard and fast rules I have are this - If you can't keep them all (all
the
vehicles that you own) running and nice, you own too many. Only one
'project' vehicle at a time, ONE. Yes, this means that parts vehicles
must
be used as parts (remove useful parts) then SOLD or scrapped. These
rules
keep you from owning 'junk' and getting too much on your plate and being
overwhelmed - just wait until you go looking and you hear "oh, yeah,
I am
planning on getting that one on the road soon" - how long have you
had it? -
"Oh, going on 16 years, but it has lots of useful parts...". Hard and
Fast
rules keep you from becoming one of those; or the fellow in a divorce
because he has so much crap that she can't stand it or the fellow who
dies
with 10 project vehicles and now the family has to deal with it.

Why do, if you don't mind me asking, why do you want a Land Rover? I
mean,
there are so many other really interesting vehicles that are easier
to get
parts for; more 'highway' drivable and easier to get into a community
of.
Here is my Land Rover owner test - have you ever owned and enjoyed a
Volkswagen Type II (extra point for a split)? What is the oldest and/or
slowest and/or highest maintenance vehicle you have owned to date?

A few others to consider that are 'in the same class' as Land Rover;
Like a 67 Bronco with a 302
Like a Jeep CJ5 - not rare enough? Well, how about a DJ5 or an older
Jeepster?
The First years International Scout 61-63 were cool - it had the
bulkhead
behind the seat just like a Land Rover and was similar in many ways
when you
look at their drive train.
Now Pinzgauers are really nice - they cost a bit more than a Land Rover
driver BUT a fraction of what it would cost to make a Land Rover do what
they do. I would have one if not for my 88", 109" and RR. They are
neat to
drive.
Want rarer stuff? More unique? There is three Austin Gypsies for sale in
Northern Alberta. The Volvo Laplanders are cool - they even made a
variant
for the British Army that has Rover running gear. Try looking for the
1 of
2000 Nissan Patrols that were shipped to North America. There is a
fellow in
Vancouver selling Gaz's. Got a few more bucks - G wagons are cheap if
you
look for a 76-86 with a diesel, they come with lockers and are very
capable
off road.

As a parting shot...
a picture I took while tree planting nears Burns Lake, BC
http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/ecars/Misc/Flextrac.html

Pretty much makes me a vehicle wacko, eh? Now if you want to go into
motorcycles....or tractors :-)

Cheers,

David

Reply-To: vanislelandrovernetwork[*]yahoogroups.com

        Hello All;
It's near the end of the year, time
to place a few
thoughts, read them at your peril!
Hope the New Year finds you all healthy and
happy.  Don't forget your designated drivers tonight and tip them
well.

               Take it easy

crossover?
Reply-To: vanislelandrovernetwork[*]yahoogroups.com

Hallo All -
My '63 109 diesel is making, well...no progress. I'm looking for a
starter that doesn't cost more than, well...my '63 109.
Word on the trail is that some older Ford and Massey-Ferguson
(Perkins diesel) tractors used the same Lucas starter that the Rover
2.25 diesel did. This is a 3 bolt pattern starter, and that's all I
know right now other than that it's on the left side of the motor
(looking forward) and it's 12 VDC negative Earth. I know no ring
gear pitch or anything. Who knows what Ford tractor diesel or Massey-
Ferguson (Perkins diesel) motors used the same Lucas starter? I get
blank stares (I can tell they're blank, even over the telephone)with
any tractor guy I talk to about anything that doesn't pull a bush
hog. While I'm tempted to describe to him how I saw a guy pull a bush
hog once with a Dormobile, I don't.
All help is needed and appreciated.
4x4xbye (I just made that up, feel free to use it at will)

A fellow in Port Alberni was trying to get into the Land Rover auto
wrecking
business. I don't know how successful he was as all the Land Rovers he
seemed to have were in photos and most of the captions said something
to the
effect that the owner was going to keep the vehicle. Land Rover
owners don't
seem to want to sell. They seem to think their grandkids will want to
restore instead.

I wasn't at his place and haven't met him. I saw a little hand
written paper
add on a garage notice board near Courtney for his stuff. I think it
was 2
or 3 miles south of town. Saw it 2 or 3 years ago.

Comox?
Lad, you are in the Mecca of old Land Rovers. There is a guy just
south of
Courtney that has (had) a yard full of them. No I don't know his
name. You
also have a car dealer that is still in business that used to be a Land
Rover dealer. Stop in and ask them. It is the dealership just on your
side
of the river and right at the top of the ramp to the government
wharf. They
still use an 88 as a service vehicle.

Good luck! Please feel free to share any treasures you find with the
rest of
us.

Merry Christmas everyone!

hi my name is Dan and i have been reading the forum for quite some
time in the interest of learning more about land rovers I do not have
one at this time but i have made a desision to find a project by the
time i turn 30 about six months.  at least something to start with i
am hoping to find something with a resonable running gear.  i am not
looking for something to restore or a show car just something to fix
into a usable condition so it can be used as intended.  mabe somebody
out there wants to give away one or two of the secret locations of a
derlict rover on the island. not running is ok and frame repairs are
ok prety much if it looks like a complete vehicle i will be
interested in having a look.

thanks for any help
