Can anyone recommend a mechanic / shop in Victoria to work on /
finish my LR ?
I've been tinkering with it for several years and now at am the point
where I just
want it on the road.  I'd like to get it to the rally in June if
possible.  It's probably
90% complete, courtesy of a retired neighbour / mechanic, but it's
taken a long
time and I just want it evaluated / completed / certified /
drivable / done.  I'm time
starved but with some cash on hand.  Any assistance appreciated.

Hi Derek,

Try expresstrailer.com they are located in Parksville. I have just
bought a trailer from them and they have loads of hitches and parts.
Their prices and quality are excellent.

It was the short axle.  It sheared tight to the hub so it was easy to
replace and it sheared very clean, with no extra parts and not a lot of
swarf. I'd be finished the job by now but I had to get all cleaned up
and
come in for dinner. All that is left is to put the plug back in the
bottom
of the diff, refill it with gear oil and pick up the tools. I wonder
if I
just left it if it would finish the job by itself? Then I just have
to go
out and test it to see if it is all working properly again. H'mmm where
could I go?

I complain about my Weber Carb so much that I should change it,
right? Well I did that yesterday. When I got the carb, I traded for
two of them. As in the past, when one gets bad enough I swap it for
the other. This is just what I did testerday. I take the poorly
running one off, steal a few parts off it and put the other one into
service for a while. The one I took off, I leave on the bench till I
need to swap it back. In the time it is sitting on the bench it
repairs itself.

I have a sweetly running carb on the 109. It should last for a few
weeks now till it decides to pack it in again.

This newly installed and seemingly sweet running carb has disabled
the Land Rover. I can only blame this new problem on the carb because
it was while I was out testing for stutter, stall and bogging that
this new calamity happened. I think I broke a rear axle. I haven't
removed them yet so I'm not positive it is the axle, it could be the
hub or Diff. I think the sound came from the right rear so---?
Testing the carb, I was up Mt Sicker and in a bit of an axle twister
with the left front wheel high in the air when there was a loud
BANG. "Gee" says I to myself. "I've heard that before." It was okay
though because I needed some winching practice anyway. There was only
a few hundred feet to winch before I was back onto the main road to
head home. It sure makes it easier winching when you have a swamper.
A bit tough on your own sometimes getting the Rover to stay put on a
hill when getting out to reset the hook to the next anchor point.

I'm better off than the Toyota Four-Runner I saw up there that had
snapped the right front spring hanger off the frame. They were tieing
it back on with a seatbelt and coat hangers. I wonder how they made
out! At least they had other vehicles with them.

I cut & pasted the AGM story from a Word document and there were 3
photos in
the story. The photos didn't appear in the Email but the captions DID.

Please delete the line at the end of the sixth paragraph that says "The
group airing down on Hillcrest Road  Direct way in. Yes, pink
wheels." and
the phrase at the end of the eighth that says "Near the top."

Sorry.

I've been told new balls are less expensive than a rechrome but the
new ones don't last any where near as long as the old ones do.

Those hinges on ebay appear to be a Series III.  I could be pursuaded

4 Wheel-Drive Association of British Columbia Annual General Meeting
2005

It is now late afternoon Sunday after a busy weekend of Four Wheel Drive
activity. One of the biggest events of the weekend was; I actually
cleaned
the mess and debris out of the backseat of the Land Rover. I had to
do this
to save me from embarrassment if anyone I didn't know looked in the
back. I
am going to have to get a center "cubby" because right now I pile stuff
between the front seats and it slowly avalanches to the floor in the
back.
Before special events, like this weekend, I clean it up and find all
kinds
of things I thought I had lost. The clean up this weekend was for the 4
Wheel Drive Association of B.C. Annual General Meeting held in
Nanaimo. My
Rover-Landers club is a member and so that makes me a member. I
wanted to
attend to see the workings of such an auspicious group (No! Really).
Victor
and I left Duncan at about 8:30 Saturday morning, got lost in Nanaimo
looking for the Wellington Hall and still got there on time for the 9:30
start.

There were about 45 people present for the meeting. Brad, the chairman,
pretty well kept things on track except for the first thing on the
agenda,
oops, pardon me, it wasn't on the agenda, a call for a draw for a door
prize. Followed by calls for more draws. Between every one of the 2
pages of
things on the agenda there were calls for draws of door prizes.
There were
elections to be held, and competition for the posts if you can
believe it,
minutes and reports were read with a stop for lunch at noon. What a
lunch! A
real nice salad, Beef dip and fresh Crab by the half. Thank to whoever
brought the crab. It was wonderful. I think I was able to get my fair
share,
maybe I should go back for a few more!

After lunch the meeting continued, and NO it wasn't boring! Worthwhile
things were discussed and people from the various clubs were brought
up to
date on what was going on with the association and around the
Province. The
meeting was finally adjourned at 4:20 but the door prize draws
continued for
another half-hour before everything was given away. It isn't that
they were
slow with the draws. It is just that there were so many things to
give away.
Highlights were a $500 factory discount on a set of Toyo Tires, Cobra CB
radio, Computer Backroad Maps and a hard copy set, Creepers, Suspension
modification parts, T shirts, Hats, Highlift jack, Emergency kits, Water
bottles, Warn flags, Gift certificates and much more; over a hundred
door
prizes. There was also the raffle of a Stihl Chainsaw and a 50/50 draw.

Victor and I were two of four Rover-Landers present. Rick Mellenger and
Gerry Buldoc were there from the mainland. About 20 of the 45 people
were
from off-island. I think Brad, the chairman, and his spouse came the
farthest. They came down from Dawson Creek. There were also some from
Prince
George. I don't know where all the rest were from but many were from the
Lower Mainland, Nanaimo, Duncan & Victoria.

At 7 o'clock there was an off-road trip happening out of Nanaimo.
Victor & I
didn't try to go on this because I had to get home to help my mother
move
into her new apartment. Oops! Late getting back! Arrived just in time
to see
my wife, son and mother finishing dinner after getting everything
unpacked
and put away. I guess I can afford to go without dinner tonight
because I
packed away so much crab at lunch.

Sunday morning at 9:30 the Island Rock Crawlers hosted the second off-
road
trip of the AGM weekend. We met at the new Tim Horton's near my place
and
about 15 vehicles headed up Mount Sicker for a day of playing in the
mud,
rain and mine tailings. My low slung and almost stock Land Rover
looked a
little out of place amongst the collection of big-tired, hard-core
off-roaders. Not all were trail rigs, there was representation from many
makes of 4WD but Jeep was the most popular. And there was even one Chevy
Blazer (the small type) that had tires smaller than mine.
The group airing down on Hillcrest Road  Direct way in. Yes, pink
wheels.

The first stop of the trip was the Tailing pit for a play in the mud
gullies. I drove the direct way in (read 'vertical') but stayed out
of the
gullies, electing to simply watch. I have already lost some
taillights to a
stump or two buried in the mud. Instead I positioned myself to winch out
anyone stuck enough to need it. One Chevy did need a bit of a tug but
the
rest of the challengers made it through the gullies okay. It sure is
evident
that "lockers" help a lot in this sort of situation.

From the Tailings we went just a couple hundred meters (for you statute
measure dinosaurs, that would be almost the same as a couple hundred
yards)
to the next challenge, a steep drop into and across a pond. Then up a
"cut"
to turn left up a near vertical face or the woosy way out to the right
around some logs and stumps. Three or four of the group tried (and were
successful) at going up the cliff-face. (YES, in their vehicles! You
would
be nuts to climb it on foot; it is too steep and wet. It is easier
and safer
to walk around.) I drove around this cliff and parked at the top to
winch
anyone that might get in trouble. No one needed a pull. (I'm amazed.)
Near the top.

After leaving this cliff top, we headed to the main mine-site to try the
tailings face. I didn't get there just yet. I chose to get stuck out
on the
flat, hard, open expanse of parking lot. I was about to go through a
puddle
on the road, about 2 feet into the puddle the Land Rover stopped,
suddenly
and completely. Stuck! It seems the edge of the puddle goes almost
straight
down about 45 cm (18 inches). The front wheels were hanging in mid air
(well, underwater), the frame was hard aground and the back wheels were
raised far enough that they didn't have enough purchase to move even a
fraction of an inch. A friendly Jeepster (Who was that masked man?)
offered
to pull me and after moving me about 10 cm (4 inches) I was able to
back out
on my own. Maybe I shouldn't have put this in here so nobody would have
known about it.

A few climbed around the tailings before we headed up "The Chute" and to
Mines Road for the trip home. The Chute was somewhere I wanted to go
for a
long time but as I am almost always on my own, haven't attempted it.
A few
vehicles had to make several runs at some of the hills but I got through
without difficulty. Well, except for carb trouble. I have nothing but
good
things to say about Weber Carbs on Land Rovers (NOT). On one hill the
carb
either starved or loaded up. The result was the same. I had to
restart in
the middle of a steep section of the trail a couple of times.
Traction didn'
t stop me from going up "The Chute" despite my tires spinning in a few
places. If the carb was decent (say... a Zenith) I wouldn't have had a
problem at all. The whole group came out this way and was only
delayed by
one of the lead vehicles having to change a tire with a damaged
sidewall.
Remember where you keep that lug-nut key for those of you with
locking lug
nuts. Ironic isn't it? The only vehicle that needed jacking up was
the one
that won the Highlift Jack as a door prize yesterday. Of course we
didn't
use the Highlift to change the tire, instead we used someone else's
short
hydraulic bottle jack. With that much suspension travel the Highlift
might
have had trouble getting the tire off the ground.

A short few miles later and we were back on pavement, stopped to air up,
said good-bye and I had Victor home by 2:30.

Hey Daniel,

I think that I have one. It's a freebie, but the one condition is
that you
have to take the hood that it's attached to.

Interested?

(255-85-16 bfg muds)
Reply-To: vanislelandrovernetwork[*]yahoogroups.com

$3200 ($2700 without tires) It is a very early series 2 5 door
station wagon that spent its whole life in BC till recently(last
registered so no out of province inspection) if bought in BC.
Original color is poppy red ( a rare color in 1959). Original 2.25 L
engine (early type). Runs great all gauges work. Still has original
solex carb. The installed new parts so far are new CB master
cylinder, rebuilt clutch and slave cylinder, new metal lines that
connect the two front wheel cylinders, POR-15 gas tank, new seals
and distance pieces all round, new wheel cylinders all around
(upgraded to series 3 on rear), new u-joints in front driveshaft,
new brake and clutch rubber lines, boiled and tested original
radiator, 255-85-16 bfg mudterrains, new tune-up parts (coil, wires,
plugs, cap, rotor, condensor, points), rad hoses, belt, battery (950
cca), front signal lights, NOS rear taillight lense(Sparto), NOS
rear hub, new shoes on rear, custom made, upgraded to 2 light license
plate light, checked and repacked all wheel bearings, new seals for
bearings all around, new distance pieces all around, plus more. Have
receipts. I have the letter from Rover if you want to see it.
Frame is solid no rust at all (amazing for a 45 year old truck and
can take any pic of any part of the frame you want to prove this).
Has deluxe hood with spare tire mount. Still sporting it's elephant
hide seat covers and interior(needs replacing), I am sure there is
more but can't remember everything. For the not so good: needs
paint/bodywork, exhaust, clutch/throwout bearing, an original round
heater, a new piece on the floor it is an easy fix. Interior is
missing bottom of front door panels and the rear door panel. Got
bogged down and now will pass on to someone who will finish it. No
frame to fix what else can you ask for.

And for $3950 ($3450 without tires). I also have a bunch of parts
that I will include but are not on vehicle yet (new tierod ends with
covers(4), 2 new tierod rubber covers, 4 new procomp shocks (the
longer ones that will work with stock springs or with parabolics), 2
new mirrors and posts, another slave cylinder rebuild kit(the one in
truck is rebuilt), fuel pump rebuild kit, cb master cylinder rebuild
kit, an engine gasket kit, 3 glass tailight lenses, new engine
mounts. And a 1969 set of 2 factory shop manuals(worth a few bucks
alone). Plus the tools I have for rovers(socket, wrenches). Whatever
else is here for rovers. Also have all parts that I have taken off
or replaced (heater, backing plates, etc). And all rover magazines
that I have bought over the last 4 or 5 years(Land Rover World and
Land Rover enthusiast, and Land Rover Owner) about $200 worth. So
this is a good deal as you would have had to buy the parts anyway
and now they are mostly installed. And you can sell what has been
taken off and the extra new parts to help pay for the little bit
that is left. Good deal.
THESE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE SEPERATELY AS I HAVE TO START SELLING OFF
THIS STUFF. ask for prices. TIRES ARE FOR SALE ALSO.
Truck is in Lloydminster Alberta.

There are at least three of us on this forum that are from the
Victoria area, there may be more.  All three of us do our own work. I
don't know of a shop here. Nor would I take mine to a shop, simply
because they are dead easy to work on. If you are in a real hurry I
can't help you as I'm in the process of replacing my transmission. If
you are not in a hurry I may be able to help you out. I can't speak

I can't speak
for the other guys but they may be able to help you out as well.
Cheers
Derek

Just bought a 68 Series II. The brakes and steering linkages need
some fixing and I don't have the time right now to do these myself.
Who do I take it to for reliable service in Victoria?

David, what do you mean you can't make it his year? Where will we
find another Dormobile?

Glad to have had you come to the meet last year and look forward to
seeing you again. Good luck with the club. It is something we have
chatted about a few times around here. We still don't know what we
will do about it. As several of us are already Rover Landers there
has been consideration of being a "Chapter", but then again....

Keep me posted about legalities and issues, benefits and draw-backs.

Hope to make the rally again this year. Little progress on my two
Ser 11a 88's and as of today a Ser 11a 109 two door. Question now is
which one to rebuild. Also picked up a used front end damaged
galvanized fram in Richmond.
