Tdi swap or keep original

#1 Post by raywongu » Tue Jul 18, 2023 4:21 pm

Hi From Nz

I have a LHD series 3 109 here in Nz. In standard form and done 59 km from new. I am planning / thinking to bring it over from Nz and plan to do some drives around BC. Have a cousin in Vancouver who said will buy from me then import and store for me. - he hasnt agreed to this part yet in case he is on here.
Any way the question is , do I keep it standard with 2.25 Gasoline or engine swap with spare 200 tdi from series 1 disco I have aswell . .its got an over drive fitted. But everything else standard. Might fit diesel heater in case it gets to cold . I was just thinking of some of the longer highway drives where gas might be less favorable. . Thank you in advance.

Hi, welcome here. My personal opinion is that an original Series 3 is worth way more than a modified one. I don’t think you’ll find very many places in Canada or the US where you can find diesel but not petrol.

Do whatever makes you happy. The TDI will have a more power and use half the fuel.

It won’t reduce the value as long as the conversion is done well. You can will obviously need higher gearing.

If you have space he could always store the original motor if you ever sell the truck somewhere that doesn't like diesel swaps (California).

I love my 200tdi disco swap in my early 90.
