Axle feeler

#1 Post by Greg_M » Thu Apr 21, 2022 11:55 am

You: Sitting on your shop stool staring at the axles you've built for your D1 beast. Shiny new paint, heavy duty Ashcroft everything, 4.12 or 4.37:1, etc.. The list is long, we know. But over the 4 and a half years it took to build them - it could be longer, you started when your daughter was born and she just graduated with honours from college - your vision has matured and you realize you really want 37's or 42's even (don't worry we won't tell your wife). A 10 ton ex-military rear axle would surely have been a better choice. Or at least some hybrid of Toyota's best (don't worry we won't tell the purists).
You sit on the stool and stare because you're committed and stuck with what you've built. But are you?

Me: Casually looking.

Toy axles won't be any stronger than built Rover axles and not strong enough.

You need to go built 9" Ford or 60 centers with 60 outers and chromo 35 spline for reliable use at that tire size. It will cost you more than the Rover axles cost. You don't want to go bigger as it will all weigh too much for the size of vehicle.

Sorry for any confusion. I meant I could be interested in the take outs from someone with aspirations to go beyond built Rover axles. A long shot I know.

You missed mine by a couple of weeks… just sold all my 24 spline stuff as I’ve gone 35 spline 609’s.

Still have a 4 linked rear case left that’s double walled & armoured if you want it.

If you want to go 609’s and keep the LR lug pattern… I can help there, just have a flush cheque book handy before you start, they are not cheap at all… ask me how I know 🙄

Thanks Andy. 609s are waaayy more than I'll ever need. Glad some folks are pushing things though. I still have a Unimog in the garage if I start feeling crazy.
Cheers,

If your thinking of going 609's expect to pay around $15k to build a pair... and that's not using Spidertrax parts !
