Advice - removing front wings

#1 Post by Canadman » Fri Apr 01, 2022 7:35 pm

So I've started stripping down my S2a SWB and everything is going swimmingly... well, swimmingly'ish.

All I have left of the body is the tub and wings to remove but there are three bolts on the top (and engine compartment side) at the back of the wing by the bulkhead. I literally can't find any way to get to the nut under that area to get those bolts out. There's simply no space trying to reach in and under from the engine compartment side and I can't find any other access.

Any advice??

...or is there no nut on those bolts, do they just screw in without nuts? I tried loosening them but they don't seem to come up, like a nut on the other side is turning with them.

Early trucks had normal bolts so you will have to get a wrench on them to get them out, on later trucks Land Rover used nut plates you should be able to see up under the wing to see what your up against. It is possible but a helper may be necessary.

I'll give her a try tomorrow. There's no way to see up under there, it's pretty much closed in so I suspect it may just be bolts and I need to go at them with the wrench and bring them up. If they have a nut on the back side though, that will be a different story. To be fair, once I started turning the one and it didn't seem to come up, I just assumed there was a nut holding it in place. It may be a case of never assume anything!

Are your mud shields still installed on the wings? If these are off you can see up to those bolts.

My 1963 had nut plates, IIRC I needed a 1/2” socket on a long extension and got at them from the front (no second wrench or second person was needed).

Mud shields are still on. Didn't realize I could access them that way. They did in fact have nuts. I managed to squeeze a spanner in underneath and get it on the nuts, and was able to remove the bolts that way. Was lots of fun though (sarcasm).
