I have owned this truck for the past 11 years, it's been my pride and joy and my dream car. Unfortunately, the time has come to part ways as we are moving to Australia and it’s staying here.
I purchased this truck in November 2010 in Australia and imported it to British Columbia in June 2012.
Over the past 11 years it's been as reliable as an old Land Rover can be and has never left us stranded. We've driven it to the centre of Australia and all over British Columbia. It was a bit beaten up when we bought her but I've spent countless hours bringing it up to scratch. It has spent most of its life garaged during the winter and outside during the summer months.
The Good,
- Safari snorkel
- Genuine Rover Australia bull bar
- Genuine Rover Australia side steps (not currently on vehicle)
- Heavy duty rear tire carrier
- 2" Hayman Reese Australia tow-bar hitch (identical to North American tow hitches)
- Rust free frame, rear cross member and all out riggers - only very minor surface rust
- Starts without hesitation, first-time, every time
- No white or blue smoke only a very small puff of black smoke on startup
- Oil changed every 5,000Km with Castrol oil and Genuine Land Rover or OEM filters, all grease-able joints greased at same intervals
- Genuine timing belt replaced 2010 and then in 2017, all Genuine parts used
- New clutch slave cylinder, master cylinder and brake master cylinder replaced with Genuine units - 2010-2013
- Radiator hoses replaced 2010
- Radiator replaced 2011
- Rebuilt transmission installed 2011, clutch, clutch fork, and spigot bush (all Genuine) replaced at the same time
- Brake discs replaced with Genuine units (AP Lockheed) - 2011
- IPF upgraded headlights and Traxide Australia headlight relay unit - 2011
- 4 x BFG Mud Terrain Tires (KM2) - 235/85-R16 (lots of tread left) - 2012
- Power steering box and power steering pump rebuilt - 2012
- Front driver side CV joint replaced - Rovers North brand - 2012
- Intercooler hoses upgraded to silicone Terrafirma units - 2013
- All universal joints replaced with grease-able GKN heavy duty units - 2013
- Viscous fan replaced - 2013
- Genuine glow plugs replaced - 2014
- Starter motor rebuilt - 2014
- Rear brake calipers replaced with Genuine new units and pads - 2014
- Goodridge stainless steel brake lines installed (all wheels) - 2014
- Heavy duty aftermarket steering arms and ball joints installed - 2014
- Super-pro poly-urethane bushes installed (almost entire vehicle) - 2017
- Rear sway bar installed - 2017
- All turn signal, brake/running, parking and license plate lights upgraded to Wipac LED units (not the side marker, reverse or headlights) - 2017
- All engine mounts and transmission mounts replaced with Genuine units - 2020
- Alternator replaced with OEM Magnetti Marelli unit - 2020
- Front brake calipers replaced with new Genuine units (AP Lockheed) and pads - 2021
- All front wheel bearings replaced with Timken units - 2021
- Front passenger side - all wheel gaskets and seals replaced 2021
- New shocks and an additional $800 in additional parts currently in shipment from the UK (service items, plastic interior trim bits, engine belts, steering wheel, a-frame ball joint, etc.) - June 2021
- Many other parts to go with truck sale that I have gathered over the years
- I have replaced all axle, transmission and transfer case fluids at least twice during my ownership with only high-end products from Land Rover, Castrol or Royal Purple (transmission)
- Over $20,000 in parts and service spent in the last 11 years to make this a reliable and fun to drive Land Rover
The Could be Better,
- Oil leaks - like most Land Rover's it leaks oil out of most joints on the drivetrain but incredibly slowly (diff inputs, transmission and transfer case inputs and outputs). Inspection at oil changes shows little (a few mL) to no topping up of fluids required
- Footwells - the outside of both the drivers and passenger footwells needs replacement. The rest of the bulkhead is solid and rust free. I have quotes from the UK to ship repair panels to BC
- Doors - the bottoms of the doors have begun to rot and the passenger side rear door has some rust higher up. Electrolytic corrosion has begun on the door skins but in an effort get a few more years out of the doors before they need a re-build I have bondo-ed the bottom of the doors and painted them. I have quotes from the UK to ship repair pieces for the doors to BC.
- Air Conditioning - hasn't worked since 2011 but all parts are in place
- Radio aerial has broken off, I have a replacement but radio works fine without it
