2. A team cannot change their entered vehicle during the event, they must use the same Land Rover for all stages of the event.
3. A team cannot participate without a Co-driver. If you do not have a Co-driver, you may be able to work with the organizers to find you a volunteer co-driver. However, no vehicle will start the competition without a Co-driver. Arrangements with the organizers will take place prior to the event day to ensure the organizers have time to try and accommodate.
4. There will be zero tolerance for alcohol consumption by competitors or volunteers during competition portions of this event.
5. Dogs are not permitted inside the competition vehicle. This is a competitive off-road event and as such may be dangerous and stressful to dogs.

A brief history of the Northwest Challenge

In 1989 the first Northwest Challenge was held in Oregon, organized by Doug Shipman. The group of Land Rovers braved the wet weather and headed out into old snow conditions, which made for slow progress. Although there were no prizes for this wet run the Northwest Challenge has evolved over the last 25 years and has even been featured in Land Rover Owner, Land Rover Monthly and Land Rover International Magazines. The original organizers Gord ‘n Perrott (WA), Aart Van Der Star (BC) and Doug Shipman (OR) thought it would be best to share the load of putting on this event every year and thus the Northwest Challenge alternates host locations between Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Since 1989 members of the Pacific Coast Rover Club and Rover-Landers of British Columbia have organized and participated in the Northwest Challenge. Dedicated Land Rover enthusiasts have come from as far as Vermont and S.F. California to participate.

Typically entry is accepted on a per team basis, although depending on what the organizer does, you could be assigned a teammate/truck when you arrive. A team consists of two Land Rovers with a minimum of two adult occupants per vehicle. Land Rovers must be licensed, insured and in good mechanical condition. A proper roll bar is required for all open and soft-top vehicles. Equipment carried, must be sufficient to see the team to and over all obstacles encountered, without the assistance of other participants.

In recent years it has been challenging to find enough volunteers and hard-core participants to pull off a challenge similar to the past, where most often the teams consisted of two vehicles, each with a driver and co-driver. The Challenge is evolving to included more technical and fun challenges, and participation by newer vehicles and competitors, rather than just a tough off-road event. With this, new life is being breathed in to a long-standing Land Rover event in the Pacific Northwest.

Hi Glen,

So not to give the teams entering any local knowledge advantage, we keep the actual location somewhat secret. It will be in the Upper Fraser Valley (Harrison area)
If you email me at [email protected] I can pass on more volunteer info.

Cheers -Andy

PS We typically have Drivers looking for Co-Drivers and Co-Drivers looking for a Drivers, so post up here if you are one or the other and maybe we can pair you up!

Hi Sam,

Yes, those NWC tabs just went down last week for some strange reason, we are working on getting them back up soon.

Basically this is what the tabs read;

Vehicle requirements all Land Rovers have to be a Mechanical Sound, Road Legal & insured. Any soft top vehicle does require a Roll Cage. A Winch is recommended but not mandatory.
Stock vehicles are welcome, but as always in an off-road challenge its always possible to have scratches and vehicle damage depending on the drivers skill and driving style (and some luck!).
We have not planned any Time Trial events in this years event to reduce the chances of vehicle damage and to make it safer for participants and volunteers.

Event rules Must be a Land Rover, Co-driver is required, complete the registration form, be onsite late afternoon on Friday and be available for Friday evening, all day Saturday & Sunday morning. A Drivers information package will be emailed to the team once entered. Points will be awarded for different stages and challenges throughout the weekend, The winner is the team with the most points at the end, awards will be given out after breakfast on Sunday morning.

Email us with any other questions [email protected]

Any chance of taking part without a co-driver? I assume that some stages would require two people to complete so likely not.

Looks like firewood is restricted the same as fruit for importation. We'll find some between the border and basecamp I'm sure.

Looking forward to some Land Rover off-road Fun this weekend!!

A few auxiliary items...

1. Thanks for the nice comments on the video guys!! I'm doing my best not to push Pieter and Leo too hard but keep them engaged in the Land Rover stuff. Someone's gotta help me finish some of my projects! :)

2. Is there an official photographer? Alloy+Grit asked if I could connect them with a photographer for another article like they did 3 years ago.

3. Is there opportunity for spectators to attend and see anything without major PITA for logistics?

Hi Don,

We will be getting the volunteers to take photos as they will be staged at the check points, plus Pamela will be taking the photos at Base Camp. These photos will be shared after the event.
The Challenge this year is not Spectator friendly as locations would be difficult to access and spectators would become a hazard trying to access the areas.

Only a few days to go, lets hope for some sunshine!!

Outstanding weekend - a huge shoutout to all the volunteers who's hard work made this possible.

Andrew thanks for making the drive from Calgary, your previous experience at these type of events is the largest part of why we won. I enjoyed your company and time spent bouncing about in your 90.

It was great to see a wide variety of rovers competing as well as parked.

Three cheers for the Organizers and Volunteers that put in the tremendous effort to clean the campsite, put together the course and events to keep the Challenge running smoothly. Three cheers to the participants running the gauntlet and asking for more!

Saturday night supper was fantastic, putting on a feed that sated the soul.

Flat tires and all,

A huge thank you, especially the Sasquatch sticker, who ever you are that put it there!
