Where to buy synthetic 15W40 oil?

Where to buy synthetic 15W40 oil?
Hi Guys,
LR of Richmond tell me the recomended full synthetic oil for a 2003 Discovery is 15W40.
I tried the obvious (nearest) places, Lordco & Can. Tire and neither place has any :?:
They had 15W40 for Diesel engines but not for gas engines :?
Any suggestions as to where to get some. :?: :?: :?:
I could go to LR of Richmond but I'm sure they wouldn't be the best value (cheapest!!)

I run 15w40 diesel oil in my 1983 2.25 Series III 109 petrol engine.
This is upon recommendations from our President Don at Rovertech.
If I can remember I spoke to Don about Synthetics, and he said not to bother.
Interesting because my other ride...a 2002 Volvo Cross Country I was recommended by the dealer not to go synthetic as regular oil was good enough, and the benefit of the Synth oil was not worth the extra $$$...and this is from a dealer!!!!!!!! :shock:
Now to confuse things...I had a 1994 5.0L Mustang, and when I went to Synth Oil on that ride I REALLY noticed a big difference...particularly on startup. Used to crank 3-4 times then catch...as soon as I went Synth it would fire on the first turn of the key.
My ramblings...talk to a pro like Don at Rovertech for the straight goods.

I use 15W40 in my diesel, and it's worked well.
About 5 years ago I ran 15W40 in my series truck with the Petrol engine. Over about a 6 month period, the engine started to smoke and had a far greater amount of blow-by than previously. This was on an engine that was relatively new at the time and created a fair bit of concern.
After discussion with several "oil experts" and a lot of reading, I concluded that the high detergent/additive level in 15W40, that's used to keep the soot in check on diesel engines is too high for a gas engine and as a result it was cleaning out the engine a bit too well. I went to Castrol 20W50 summers, and 10W30 winters, and the smoking stopped in short order.
Just my experience... I think 15W40 is rated for diesels for a reason, and if used in gas engines should only be done so for short periods, say one or two oil changes as a cleanout, rather than regular usage.

Synthetic oil in a 2003 Discovery 4.6
Thanks guys for all the info.
The Disco has synthetic oil in right now so i figured it was best to stay with it when I change oil.
It seems there is no definitive answer, more personal preference :?
How many Discovery & Range Rover owners do we have out there running full synthetic oil and what are you using?? (come on, dont be shy!)

Opinion here... I think it's more important to give the truck regular changes with a maximum mileage of 5-6000 KM between changes than it is what type of oil you're using, so long as you're using a major brand, good quality oil. Most engine problems I've seen (once on my own vehicle back when I had the Nissan Pathfinder, and numerous on customer vehicles when I was in the trade) were due to breakdown of oil that was way overdue for a change and didn't do its job of protecting components.

I agree, do what the manual says. On a Disco II the following chart is in the RAVE manual for viscosities:IMO, follow the factory guidelines unless you have oil analysis that says it needs changing earlier.

As to the maintenance schedule, I haven't been able to find one specifically for the Disco II. Does anyone have the passport book and tell us the factory recommended intervals?
I do know, on other maintenance schedules I've read for the Rover V8, such as that of the Disco I or the Defender, that it is 6000 KM the first change, and 12,000 KM thereafter, with the warning that if the vehicle is used off-road or under heavy load, that it should be more often. Since I'm not using full or part synthetic oil, and I regularly use my truck off-road, I tend to lean towards the side of changing the oil more often.
