Hi all!
Well it seems that my transfer case for my disco 1 my have packed it in the other day I was backing up and heard the usual clunk as the discos do. Put the truck in drive and she just sat there so i put the t case into neutral then pull it back and locked the diff and drove away as if nothing was wrong, then I realized I still had the diff lock, I took it out and the engine just reved like it was in neutral so i put the diff back into lock and holly crap !!!
There was a very loud bang the truck came to hault .
I took the diff out of lock and put my foot on the gas and heard chunks rattling below me and the speedo didnt work and there was now a gear gridng noise I managed to limp it home. I looked underneath to see if there where any large gaping holes in the transmission or t case and saw nothing.
So any thoughts on this?
Is it cheaper to rebuild than to by a used tcase somone said it could be the front dif also!
Cheers

It could be an axle.
With someone inside on the brakes, put it in gear and look underneath and see if either driveshaft is turning. If so, it is that axle.
As to cost of rebuild versus another unit, it depends what is broken.
Reading your explanation.... It sounds like you had a broken axle. You then tried engaging the diff lock with the the gears moving at speed. That action may have damaged the transfer case. It may be possible both items are now broken.

looking at the rear diff there is a chunk of the diff casing stiking out by the filler hole, so the rear diff is buggered and with the speedo not working and the funny sound from the tcase Im guessing somthing is up with the t caes, found a tcase for a $1000.00 used, Is this a good deal?
What about a used rear diff?
Cheers

I suspect you broke the center diff engaging the diff lock while in gear. You could just fix that if it is the problem. $1000 seems raasonable to me, but I'm no expert.
A used stock rear diff should not cost a lot. It is quick to pull out. See if it is just the center (the cross pins like to break) or if the ring and pinion were damaged as well.
