heavy bumper

#1 Post by dan » Mon Oct 01, 2007 10:20 am

Hi everyone,
I've just bought an ARB bumper with a winch on it. It is quite heavy and I am wondering if it is ok to mount such a heavy unit on the front? Will it have any detrimental effect? Thanks everyone, regards, Dan.

Hi Dan,
Yes it will have a detrimental effect but what are you going to do, winches and winch bumpers are heavy. Your 110 is going to carry the weight better than my 90 but it will still be noticable under hard cornering and when diving into potholes. I put in the heavy duty 110 springs which really stopped bottoming out on hard dives. Maybe you already have these. Total assemblies can be very different in weight. My PTO+winch+bumper+driveshaft add up to over 210 Ibs hangin' out there in the breeze. Yikes.

Hi Bill, I'm not sure if I have the heavier springs. What do I look for to see if I have them?

Rear 90HD springs work well on the front of a winch equiped 90/110.

Hi Dan,
Landrover uses an amatuerish colour coding on their springs applied with a paintbrush directly onto the coils. I don't have all the codes in front of me but the springs listed as heavy duty 110 have a redish/orange stripe (orangey/red if you prefer) beside a yellow stripe and then a green stripe. You will need to wash your springs to be able to see the paint and hopefully yours are not too rusty. Mr. Landrover guy with the high tech paintbrush usually manages to swipe at least three wraps of the coils vertically with the paint stripes at the factory so don't give up if you can't see them easily.
