I have been looking at getting a rover again and in shopping around it seems that there are more 2nd generation range rovers hitting the used market lately at prices very competitive with the series, defender or disco models. How do these newer RRs compare to the older RRCs or the discos out there? I am mostly interested in reliability (compared to other rover lines) as well as repairability and cost of maintenence (again, as compared to other rover lines). One last question, my old RRC was a blast off-road, the newer one that I am looking at is a 4.0 with a coil spring conversion done to it, how do the newer RRs compare off-road to the older models?

Rob,
There are n ot too many P38 Range Rovers that off-road in the club. I only recall seeing one out on a run and I don't think they were club members. I believe that they are quite capable but they can suffer from more electrical gremlins than their older siblings.

I agree with John's assessment. The electrical gremlins could make life a little bit miserable. That being said, I think the overall quality of the electronics has evolved through the years as well. I drive a 99 Disco and the electronics have held up very well. A couple of sensors have developed various faults and had to be replaced but these were quite minor.
I was told to stay away from the first year of the P38 from someone that knows them intimately as it had many gremlins. I think a later model P38 would be an excellent off-road truck. I don't however know if they cost anything more to repair than the Discovery.

Hey fellsa, thanks for the info. I have decided to pass on the 96 Range Rover... ABS light is on and from what I see on the range rover site that can equate into a HUGE bill (more than the price of the truck). It was a nice truck but just the sight of the complex computer readout and miles of wires and sensors is rather intimidating... maybe I should stick to the simplicity of the earlier generations
