Who can rebuild my 3.9?

#1 Post by pathfinder » Sun May 13, 2007 8:40 am

I was up in arms whether to have my 3.9 redone or convert to a diesel. Well...I think the diesel is just going to be too much money so I'm wanting someone who can rebuild my 3.9 or track down a 4.6 to install. I'd also like my drivetrain gone through, make sure the transmission, transfer case and diff's are good to go for many years to come.

Is there anyone in the Okanagan that knows newer Rovers or will I have to head down to the lower mainland?

Thanks!

i think rebuilding your 3.9 will be a few bucks also, maybe the cheaper route would be to find a good used spare engine tranny and transfercase which can be found anywhere between 500 dollars and up depending if you are in a rush or not ( for a replacement 3.9 engine). a 4.6 will be more costly but if that is what you want you can also rebuild your 3.9 to get a lot more power. there are a few great websites that deal with rover V8 rebuilds. you can get an idea for specs you would want on your engine and have someone locally build it for you.
also there is a guy on ebay in the states that once in a while sells brand new crate engine rover 4.0 for about 3000us

I had a 4.6 fitted in my classic to replace my 4.2 and finding a reasonable 4.6 at a reasonable cost used can be frustrating and tricky especially from the US and the fitting is fairly straight forward but a little research is required but don't hesitate to contact me for help as I've been through it.
A used 4.6 and install will be 5k - 10k unless you are lucky with finding a good cheap engine and do it yourself.
But the cheapest option is a replacement used 3.9.

yeah, I'll probably go for another 3.9. I'm not gonna throw in a used one though, it isn't worth the effort. Mine is still ok, leaks a bit of oil but doesn't really burn it. I just want something that is as close to bullet proof as possible for longer trips and more performance would be nice.

check the flame arrestor

Leaking and rovers are sometimes synonymous… If the engine is leaking around the seals, valve cover gasket and so forth you might want to check that the crankcase isn’t pressurizing. I had a 3.5 that was leaking and found that the gray metal flame arrestor on top of the valve cover was clogged-up so the crankcase was not breathing. Took it off – cleaned out the gunk from the metal mesh inside (dirty job) put the mesh back, reinstalled the canister and voila leaks went away! Not sure if the 3.9 has a similar canister flame arrestor on the PCV system but might be worth checking.

Regards, Rob

PS: I hear what you are saying about going for something a little beefier… I switched from a 3.5 to a F*rd 400 (in a different truck though) and I have got to tell you… there is no replacement for displacement (just wished the old F250 had that RRC ride)

Well, I could always just drop in a 5L...kinda tempting, just not sure how much I want to bastardize my ride

non rover V8's can cause all sorts of weight disribution problems with handling and braking due to the heavier weight. but that's the down side.

That's what I'd rather do...was just thinking cost effectiveness with a north american v8 but the more I think about it the more I figure a non rover v8 would end up costing as much or more because of electronics and such.

I'm just not having any luck finding someone who can do the work on my disco.

Don't forget, your Rover V8 IS, for all intents and purposes, a north american V8, and as such will benefit from many of the north american style mods, of which many are available. the best place to start is at www.aluminumv8.com as listed above.
