Island meeting of the 4WDABC

4 Wheel Drive Association of BC
Annual General Meeting 2007

17 March 2007, 0830, Travel Lodge, Silver Bridge Inn, Duncan, BC

I didn’t count how many people were there but I would guess there was about 30 to 35. Victor and I were there, as were Pam Blair, Dave Blair and Sean Doherty all from the Rover Landers. Other local Duncan and Vancouver Island people were there as well, particularly because the Island Rock Crawlers were hosting it this year. Also there were people from Nanaimo, the Lower Mainland and as far north as Dawson Creek. Herd of Turtles was represented as well as North Caribou Offroad Adventurers Society; of note, the Rover Landers decided to not continue as members as a club this year. Those of us that attended and are Rover Landers decided to renew as private members.

This provincial association has had Web based problems and from what I understand, rather pointed complaints from “Onlineâ€

I have to apologize for my extremely late response as I didn't see this post until today. Here's a bit of an update.....

I have accepted the position of president of the 4WDABC, accompanied by Scott Hopkins (VP), Kathy Whittemore (Treasurer) and Guy Avidan-Shavit (Secretary). This is a complete board replacement and I have to say that our first two weeks in our positions has been an eye opener. After two weeks, here's where we are:

1. We have the web-site back up and running (a HUGE thanks to Dave for steering us through this) and should have all aspects of our web presence back within the Association's "sphere of influence" within a few months. The .COM, .CA and .ORG domains will all reference our site which will be kept much more current than it has in the past.

2. Our finances have been a disaster. We're fixing it. While I don't think we need to fully follow Dave's "sustenance" budget, we're going to be very close to it. I will not allow the Association to operate at a deficit this year.

3. Communication from the Association has been less than poor. This will change this year. Individual members will be receiving a letter in the next few days which gives an overview of our status. I have committed to providing significantly better communication to the membership and public than has been done in the past -- if you're not hearing from the Association, PLEASE send me a note telling me so......

4. I intend to propose a number of membership structure changes. We're examining the legalities of what we want to change....but overall I want to make it easier for clubs (registered societies or not) to partner with the association without adhering to unrealistic membership dues.

Basically, we're in "survival" mode, but I'm extremely optimistic that we can grow the association this year. I have had a number of excellent conversations with my contact at the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and the Arts regarding trail/recreation site adoption, and I intend to meet with individual clubs/organizations/user groups over the next few months to get a better idea of what the membership (and potential membership) are looking for from the Association.

Please let loose with questions or comments.....I'll take our lumps, but I need to know what you're looking for to ensure I'm building in the right direction.

We're still getting the site moved from the previous provider. By the end of this week it should .COM, .CA and .ORG!
