I may have asked this question before but here goes again, I have a bit of spare cash as i opted to not spend $1600 on a patriot roof rack so Im looking at a rear locker for my 96 disco.
I have done some home work and looked at the True track and the Maxi drive and Detroit locker and A.R.B.
Most of the people with discos run the Detroit in the rear and the True tack up front, latley while on the trails I have come across alot of truck running ARB's that are not engaging so Im not to keen on the ARB too much crap to go wrong on the trail.
What your take?

Maxi Drive and well worth the money as you get stronger axles with the package.

Just as a point of camparison an ARB will likely cost you around $1200 to $1500 to buy, get an air system to run it, and set it all up. You may still need to upgrade your half shafts on top of this but good one can be had from the state for $400 US + shipping etc... To be safe I'd budget around $2000 for a full ARB locker install in the back end of a rover.
Another option is to use a Toyota electric locker, a complete third member will run around $1000 with 4.10 gears but then you need the shafts to go with it and you'll have to change the gearing in the other end of the truck to match it. I'm not sure what this would all cost.
Detroit Trutrack and Detroit locker are the cheapest options but have driving issues that are quite well know.

It is the endless argument, but anywho......
On the Detroit issue.... I've had one in the back of the 90 for a year (picked it up for $250 used). I've been cringing in anticipation of the "bad" handling that some people say they have.... Well, nothing has happened so far. Lots of solid hard off roading, driving on pure ice, snow, whatever. I can not tell anything is different other than I can drive up things without wheel spin. No strange behaviour in corners, no sliding on side slopes, nothing that people promise.... So far anyway.
For a Disco, make sure you budget on proper halfshafts and if used in the front CVs. Fortunately the Longfield option makes the front pretty low cost nowadays. If you are on a budget, poke around for used ones as they can be had for half price fairly regularly. Lots of people these days going up to teh Toyota centers and have the Rover lockers that they need to dispose of.
Maxi-Drives are the nicest without going the Toy route. I had them in Australia when I lived there. But I would compare cost. I'm not sure how much they cost here. In Aussyland, I was in the same club as the owner of M-D, so the cost was fairly well discounted.
On the Toyota route, the proper method would be a full 30 spline conversion with Longfield CVs. This is really only for the serious off roader going bigger than 35s. In addition to the centers, the Rovertracks full kit is the best way to go, $1800 USD for the front and $575 for the rear, http://www.rovertracks.com/products/driveline.html plus a bit o machining.

just for info, i have the champion 9000 pound winch from costco and it has been great so far, came with all the extras and pulley and rollers for 400 dollars. and costco stands behind them. its a pretty good bang for the buck and even has the hitch adapter so you can pull from the back. only issue so far is that it is a little slow.
