engine and transmission re-builds

#1 Post by rico_vancouver » Thu Jun 10, 2004 11:19 am

As I do more investigation into diesel 110s, it seems like re-builds are frequent for both engine and transmissions. I used to own a Toyota Landcruiser BJ42 which had well over 150,000 kms on it's original engine and transmission with no signs of giving up. If it had aluminum body panels like the Rovers, I'd probably still be driving it.

Are engine and transmission re-builds chronic for 90s/110s?

Well, yes and no..... If they are driven correctly and maintained correctly, no...... IME My V8 Disco (in Australia) had 300000 kms with a solid engine and gearbox. although the timing chain was probably stretched, but simple enough to fix. knew lots of people with TDIs that had mor ethan that in mileage and were fine. I also spent a good time chatting with the local 4WD mechanic that I used in Australia. Toyota owns the world there, around 75% market share in 4WDs. He told me that there was NO difference in overall reliability between the major 4WD brands, Toyota, Nissan and Rover. They had different design faults but they all had just as many. One of the guys I wheeled with that had a modified 75 series Toy went through an engine, two gearboxes, a t. case and 3 axles is about a year and a half....

Remember there are a lot of ex-military units floating around locally. They were not treated nicely during their military lives.
