Lokar shift bracket Zf4hp22

I found a cheap lokar bracket on Facebook marketplace and had a go at fitting it in my series.
My existing DIY shifter was just to mickey mouse.
Not sure if I'll get a lokar shifter for it or one of the other options on the market, but this should make a decent base for mounting whatever I go with

I took a leap of faith and ordered the Clayton Machine Works side detent shifter.
Seems to have a more robust detent pattern than the other similar models. It's intended to be linkage driven floor mount but I'm hoping it won't be an issue to mount it on the lokar bracket instead. If the linkage is too finicky I may try to use the stock cable from the ZF shifter instead.

Levers seem needlessly pricey though. I'll want something more fitting to the stock interior.
Hopefully there won't be too much modding of the detent plate required

Yeah, I looked to the amazon one, much cheaper but doesn't have any detent at all.
The Gennie looks good but looking at one of their detent plates, it seemed like if you push to the side, you could over shift straight through to any gear. I was able to see a video of the CMW in operation, so it gave me a bit of confidence in the workings of it.
Though the Gennie shift pattern diagram indicates it functions just like the CMW. Hard to say.
Hopefully it works out as I'm less able to financially absorb dumb build decisions now than I was at the beginning of the project.

So long story short..... this isn't the ideal way to mount the shifter. Partially because I bought a floor mount shifter not a trans mount.
I thought the Lokar bracket would make a convenient base and it kinda does but there isn't really a great way to affix it to bracket due to the curved profile of the bracket. Even if I had the appropriate shifter for the bracket, I feel like it places the shifter too close to the center of the trans and will create an issue with the transfer case shifter. My plan is to get a bit of flatbar and drill and tap that to take the shifter then use some of the existing holes to secure the flatbar to the bracket.

Overall, I think it will turn out OK. I just need to muck around with the length shift selector lever, either on the trans end or on the shifter side to get the correct linear movement of the linkage.

Just a bit of flatbar from Rona with a bit of drilling and tapping.
I would have preferred to use the bolts that came with it, but it turns out that the I size drill bit required for 5/16 24 tap is some sort of magical unicorn that doesn't exist in Victoria.

I finished setting it up on my spare trans. I will have to file out the detent for first gear a bit deeper as it can't quite get there. All the other detents work okay.

I'm not super impressed with the positive lockout points. The one into reverse from d/n is effective. There's meant to be one from the lower gears into d but it's either not there or not effective. The rest of it just adds a bit of click or feel when shifting which is handy since there is no indicator.

All things considered I think it works ok.
The current selector lever needs a more mermanent solution. It's currently bolted together and I don't trust it to maintain position over time,but at least I know where the hole has to be in relation to the post.

This style seems like it will be cheaper than the lokar set up, but sticks and balls probably bring the cost up to par with the push button models.

Success. After deepening the 1st gear slot in the detent plate, it works great on the spare tranny. I didnt want to disassemble the shifter so deepening the detent slot was a real bitch!

Just need to source a lever for a reasonable price and a defender shift boot.

Looks great! One thought, you may want to make a mud shield around the shifters so they don’t get full of grit and dirt. That’s what I did for mine when I did a similar conversion.

Good call, I was going to make a foam insert out of a 'kneeling pad' My thought was more about insulation from noise and draft to the cabin, but maybe something to block the Mud and dirt from below as well. The mounting plate covers a lot of the under area so it wouldn't take much to close the rest of the gap.

Next step will be making a shift indicator.
The Lokar and Dakota digital ones are just as needlessly expensive as all the other shifter components.
I've ordered a cheap rotary switch of amazon

I plan to actuate this with a linkage and shift arm set up. I'm hopeful with the many positions that one will match up cleanly with each of the transmission gear positions. I'll use the switch to operate dakota digital indicator set up that is basically just a series of LED lights and a label plate.
