More axle work!

Rear axle: I was able to find replacement rear diff in my basement for the one with bad bearings that I installed a few weeks ago. It is now in. I've decided to go with a fully floating rear axle on this one. I've heard a few stories of semi floating shafts on series I flying out while driving, and I don't really want to experience that. More to come on the fully floating conversion! I will be keeping the original Series I axle (and narrower track width vs. Series 2/3)

Front Axle: Original Land Rover swivel balls, and good quality bearings, seals, and brakes. Nothing too special here except that I "upgraded" the steering to a later Railko bush setup.

Looking good now sitting on it's two front feet for the first time in 30 years.

Engine Time!

Now that the front axle is in I thought I should clean the dust off the engine and put it in. This engine was rebuilt many years ago by Gary Mummery, but has been collecting dust ever since. I gave it a new thermostat, and bypass hose before putting it in. I'll probably have to do a few more little things to it, but all accessible while it is in the engine bay. It now has a home. I quickly assembled a few body panels just to see what things will look like when I'm done.

Thanks ANDYD! I had a good look through your build posts on here, and they have helped in a few areas. Especially with removing the old brake/clutch pivot from the frame.

I'm back! Over the past couple of months I have been busy getting married and winding down here on the farm. On to more Series I project stuff over the winter now. I decided to bite the bullet and get started on the transmission that has been sitting on the floor of my garage since the start of the year. I was able to open it up and get the parts sorted and cleaned (somewhat). I definitely will be replacing all of the bearings, seals, and some of the gears. Overall though the transmission looks like it is in pretty good shape. It was definitely rebuilt poorly in the past at some point, but I've found no major damage (yet). My next task over the next couple of weeks is looking through each part in detail and figuring out if it is reusable or not.

Here are some before and after shots of the disassembly.

Well the hard part is done. Parts cleaned, sorted, and assessed. I’ll be posting a full list of all the parts that I need to order for this particular rebuild. Some people have asked about cost in the past, so I’ll post that too.

Nice job, I'm impressed with your level of strip down, nothing quite as nice as starting with a clean canvas to show your true artistic skills on the rebuild.

Keep up the good work 8)

-Andy

PS- Congrats on getting married - let's hope she understands that there is two loves in your life .... and the Land Rover will demand as much attention (or more)

Thanks ANDYD!

I got some gears delivered today in the form of a 1959 Series II! The gears in my transmission were pretty shot, and this one looks like it has some nice gears in it (in the transfer case at least). Looking forward to popping open the gearbox and seeing what's in there.

The work continues while waiting for gearbox parts! Got the pedals set up, and fuel tank installed. The fuel tank is an amazing thing, from Pangolin 4x4.

All those levers and springs are a marvel of British Engineering !!

Your Fuel tank looks great 8) The Gas stations in Richmond are all Full Service, I have fun pulling in with my Series 1 and telling the young 17yr old attendant "Fill her up" ...
Then watching while they circle the vehicle looking for the gas cap  cruel I know!

Pulling into a gas station in rural Oregon one fine winter day, the attendant looked at me kind of funny. Rolling up in a snow-covered 107 Station Wagon was bound to get the looks. In Oregon, at least at the time, you couldn't pump your own gas. The attendant was astonished as I pulled the seat out on the passenger side and opened up the tank. Fill 'er up please. All the while having a black lab look over his shoulder to make sure he did it right. I didn't make him play the "find the filler cap" game. It was too cold, but I still got a good laugh out of it.

Okay, I've fallen behind on the updates again. Before Christmas I was able to finish rebuilding the gearbox! It was super fun to do, and I was able to do it all in my living room. It was too cold to do it in the garage without the heater installed yet!

Well here it sits today. Gearbox fully installed, finished aligning the doors properly, installed the galvanized sills below the doors, finished wiring the dash, and loosely installed the seatbase. I wanted to tease myself with what things are going to look like on the interior, so I tossed the seats and floors in there to take a pic.

Hi Jacob, It was great to meet you the other day. I have been on a very long hiatus from my land rover project and with certain things going my way with the paperwork, it has been fun getting back onto the old truck. Aside from the galvanizing work, do you get other parts powder coated, and if so, are they local? What is the name of the company in Calgary that does your galvanizing? It would be good to have you over to see where I'm at and to pick your brains on some things.
Rgerads,

Doug

Well it’s been just about two years and it’s done! There is so much fiddling that needs to be done right before you think you are almost done. There are a few small things that I would like to get done in the future. Things like reupholstering some seats, maybe installing seatbelts, and wiring the interior dome light, but not super important right now. I just want to get driving! I’ll keep this forum post alive by posting annual maintenance stuff, but other than that maybe I’ll see some of you out on the roads or off the roads!
