Military trailer registration questions
Quick couple of questions
Anyone in BC have a Sankey trailer registered for road use by ICBC? If so, did ICBC issue a VIN for it?
Anyone in Alberta have a Penman trailer registered for road use and did it get an assigned VIN?
Struggling with the red tape monster at ICBC so looking for information to help build an argument.
Thanks for any insight, cheers, Rob

Can you register it as homemade?

Re: Military trailer registration questions
Short answer is "no"... some brainiac at ICBC is trying to say that the Penman is for off road use only. I am fighting them on it so looking for examples of road registration to make the argument solid.

Re: Military trailer registration questions
Both my Sankey from the UK and the military trailer from the Canadian military are both registered as "home-built" even though both had serial numbers. I think because they are small it was easier for the Autoplan Agent.

Re: Military trailer registration questions
There are some new ICBC issues over registering and insuring ANYTHING ex-military, it seems.
Not sure how strict they are going to be on Land Rover military variants, but it seems that all ex-military Humvees, for instance, are now banned from the roads in BC:

Re: Military trailer registration questions
The reason I asked the questions is that I'm trying to register a Penman trailer and anything with green paint is raising red flags at ICBC these days. The problem goes directly to that CVSE bulletin about x-military vehicles being off-road use only. The ICBC registration staff (not the local agents) that I have dealt with so far seem ill-informed (that's the most polite way I can put it)... the bulletin is specifically for inspection of motorized military vehicles but the registration office can't seem to get their heads wrapped around the idea that a trailer is not a motor vehicle. I have taken the time to remind them that trailers are not motorized and that there are different definitions in the motor vehicle act for motor vehicles and trailers (I assumed that they would know that, so far, it doesn't seem like it). They appear to be confused by the CVSE bulletin and somehow they think that a bulletin specifically addressing motorized vehicles should be applied to trailers because they were previously owned by the military. This is clearly an over-reach and I am fascinated that I am even having to debate this with ICBC but apparently that is exactly what I am doing. Alberta registers these trailers with no problem at all for road use as do many other jurisdictions including some in the USA and many in Europe. I am hoping that ICBC will get this figured-out and will let you know how things go.

Re: Military trailer registration questions
I guess that also resolves the question as to whether or not they will allow an ex military Land Rover to be registered. If they are going as far as trailers, there will be zero chance with a vehicle.
