1966 S2A 88 Rebuild
I’ve been here a while and finally decided to post my project. So here is my new to me 1966 S2a 88 Station Wagon with safari roof, LHD in marine blue bought locally in Victoria from fellow board member Frank.
The truck sat for a bit in my garage while I did a bit of research on how to do this; I’m not a mechanic, but I finally decided to jump in and get started. According to the licence plate, the truck was last on the road in 2008. I’ve started the teardown and it’s been a learning process. I photograph everything before and after it comes off, notes are taken for awkward stuff and small parts go into plastic bins.
Pics 1 & 2: The day I picked it up.
Pic 3: Current status of teardown. The bulkhead floorboards will buff right out.
Pic 4: Box looks fairly straight and there are the mud flaps.
Pic 5: Driver’s side view.
Pic 6: The engine.
Pic 7: Various parts. Other parts including the roof, heater, ect are either already in the garage or in bins.
Pic 8: Doors and seats. With the exception of the rear bench, the front seats were hazardous material 🤮
Pic 9: love the old school Karmann Ghia hazard light switch knob, but it will go.
More to follow.

I’ve managed to get some work done on the teardown.

Bulkhead and tub are off.

Victory is mine! The engine and gearbox are out.

Engine and gearbox getting a good hot pressure wash.

Doesn’t look like much, but I’m quite happy with the production.
The clutch, flywheel and some small stuff are off. You can actually see the remains of the paint on the engine and the aluminum of the gearbox! Some of that grime is very persistent.

Clutch and flywheel until they get cleaned up for inspection.

Matt, I’ll be in touch shortly with my shopping list!
I’m in Langford just up the way by 6 Mile Pub.
Thanks

Re: 1966 S2A 88 Rebuild
The engine is almost completely stripped down. I’m encouraged that there have been no nasty surprises; still have to do a complete inspection though.
Someone has clearly been in this engine in the not too distant past.
Cylinder head, rocker shaft and cover off.

A table full of engine parts.

There’s crusty and then there’s crusty. I’m not exactly sure what is normal, but I think the carburetor needs to be adjusted.

How the engine currently sits.
