Headliner material source recommendations?

#1 Post by DuncanHague » Mon May 24, 2021 10:14 am

Unsurprisingly my D2 needs a new headliner and I need to clean out all the drains while I’m at it.

What’s a good source for headliner material? I’m in Nanaimo, would be great to buy local if at all possible.

Also any recommended dimensions or tips before I buy/tackle the job?

Thanks

Duncan

Hi Duncan,
I just got my headliner recovered at Pacific Auto Trim in Vancouver. Go and see Krysta and she can give a price on material.
If you have them do it for you, pull the headliner yourself. This is the least expensive option ~$300ish. If you have pull, recover and reinstall, it is considerably more for the labour involved.
I pulled mine, dropped off, they recovered and I picked up and did install. It is not difficult to do, just time consuming.
Also, when pulling the headliner, I strongly suggest pulling the sonroofs out and revealing them to the roof of the car.

I should qualify,

I did the headliner myself on my old VW golf, I would recommend having these guys do the recover.
If you do it yourself, you need 2m of material, a couple cans of spray adhesive, fabric roller, large clean and dry space to do the job, a soft wire brush to remove all the old glue (reddish stuff), shop vac to clean up, and a lot of patience to make it look good.
Too much adhesive will show as staining through the material.
If you want to check out the job they did on mine, email me and you can come and see it.

I did my P38 a couple of years back. I got the material from JT Outdoor Fabric (I think Ontario). They were great to deal with. If you can get it locally all the better. If you can get it done (by dropping your headliner there) for $300, that sounds like a great idea. I needed more than 2 cans of the spray adhesive (around $40 a can), and I think the material was around $120 (2 1/2 metres IIRC), so I think it was almost $250 to do it myself. It’s not terribly difficult to do, but it takes some time and is fiddly. If you end up doing it yourself, keep us posted and I’ll try to remember and give you any tips I can think of.

Duncan,

I will be doing my headliner very soon. I plan to remove the fabric/foam material and then paint it using these steps:

Duncan,

I will be doing my headliner very soon. I plan to remove the fabric/foam material and simply paint the headliner board in black. I will also be adding in Reflectix insulation before re-installing the headliner:

If you are looking to re-fabric it, there is a good tutorial:

All the best on your project.
