RRC door latch issue

#1 Post by rayhyland » Wed Apr 08, 2020 12:12 am

My 1988 RRC driver’s door doesn’t work anymore. It used to be you had to hold the key turned when you pulled the outside latch. Then you had to pull both the inside and outside latches at the same time. Now nothing works and I am climbing in via the window.

Anyone dealt with this in the past? I heard that the new replacement lock mechanisms are not as good as the originals and that the best repair is to replace the worn springs in the original lock.

Also, any suggestions on jimmy-ing the door open?

Thanks!

Ray

Hi Ray,

From I remember from my Range Rover days is that 90% of door lock issues can be fixed by s good lubrication of all the moving parts
As they get older all the linkages and touching surfaces begin to drag and as the actuators and solenoids get weaker they cant make it work any more (sound familiar!)

Any how, I would suggest that you get a good oil lubricant and spray every moving part and linkage (will have to remove inner door card) and also fire a bunch into the key hole. Best to use one of those straw thingy attachments on one of those oil aerosols as it really helps to get it in there,

Cheers
Andy

Thanks Andy

Mine has manual locks, and everything turns and moves smoothly, it just feels like the levers are no longer connected to the appropriate bits internally.

Didn't remember right away but I think that I've had something similar happen but it was either the inside or the out side not working. Took the inner panel off and got access to a rod that had slipped it's connection. Other than some luck with a slim jim I don't know how to open it if both are not working.
