Working on the defender.

#1 Post by Glenn D. » Sat Feb 25, 2006 10:40 am

Coming home from skiing last night I saw my battery light come on. Interesting, so I thought my alternator bushes were gone , and hoped I'd make it home before my battery died (it was 20 blocks.)

Then my Fanbelt goes , and I had to park it cause Suddenly the temp is through the roof. I'm assuming my alternator failed, seems likely.

Does anyone have any recomendations as to a replacement?

Anyone running uprated alternators?

Or do you think It's something else more sinister and I should just get a 300tdi ;)

It is quite possible that it was just your belt failing that made you alternator not work to its full capacity and then 20 blocks later it failed?
I would just try a new belt first.

Springs?

#4 Post by Glenn D. » Sat Feb 25, 2006 4:02 pm

I'm also half way done replacing my shocks and springs. I got the OME nitrochargers and am happy with them.
I also bought new tubular shock towers, all from rover park boys.

Any recomendations on springs? Can you put Discovery springs in a defender? A small 1-2 inch lift would be nice but not really manditory for me.
As this truck is also my daily driver I don't want it way to stiff..

Alternator

Glenn,

Usually with all of my domestic trucks it has been way cheaper to take my starter motors and alternators to a rebuild shop. They can do these things quickly and cheaper than dealers or full replacement component.

Don't up rate your alternator unless you are adding batteries for winches, big HAM radios or big light arrays. If you added that stuff to your existing system then it's possible that higher loading and the resultant heat was a contributing cause to your alternator failure. Then perhaps a bigger 80 to 100 amp alternator may be what you need.

I replaced mine with a 94amp 12SI GM alternator from Brighouse in Richmond. http://forums.bcnewsgroup.com/roverland ... highlight=
