Clutch Replacement Vancouver Area

Looking to get a clutch replaced on a 300 tdi defender 90, anyone have a recommendation of somewhere and/or what would be a reasonable price for the labor on a job like this?

With something like a 300 TDI defender it would be best to go with one of the firms listed above, because they have all the special tools and the experience to do the job quickly and efficiently. You could get a quote from someone else who would charge fewer dollars per hour but I think the overall cost would still be more.

Why not do it your self, its not hard. Im sure that Rovalution and the other shops do good work, but at the end of the day they are working against the clock and if they can cut corners, they will.

Tony,

Pretty harsh words about cutting corners. Just trying to understand the context of your comment. Have you used Hesp or Rovalution in the past?

I personally have never used Rovalution or Hesp. I know people who have, with mixed experiences. The automotive repair industry is fixed rate, meaning that if it takes a tech 4 hours to do a 3 hour job, he gets paid 3 hours. I am a Heavy Duty Tech and we are not fixed rate, but paid hourly regardless. I don't know but I expect those shops are fixed rate. The point that I was trying to get over is that its a Defender, designed to be repaired in a shed, with limited tools. I have done it, from deserts to jungles, in the dark, under a tarp. I don't have a particular hate on for the mentioned shops, its just that I know doing myself, I will be thorough and do a better job.
I really hope the guy does his own clutch, there are lots of people to give him advice and even help if necessary.

I doubt they work fixed rate. They give an estimate and charge actual time. I’ve never seen any place other than dealers that charge fixed rate.

The small shop around the corner from me uses fixed rate, even on my RRC. They ended up spending a little more time than quoted time about 25% of the time but was charged only fixed rate unless the PO had done something stupid like welding some parts in the engine bay :shock:

Don at Rovalution is a solid guy. I don't know Hesp personally but I assume they're fine as well. But you can do this if you have a weekend to spare (it won't take the whole weekend but good not to be rushed). I've got a 300tdi and the clutch is an easy job to do.

You'd need a good floor jack, the clutch alignment tool and I'd also use an engine hoist as well, but not entirely necessary. The rest is regular hand tools.

I'd swap to a heavy duty throughout arm while you are in there as it's one of those annoying things that can leave you stranded.

When my clutch fork broke, my regular mechanic suggested taking it to Wilf's Transmissions, one of the oldest and most respected shops in Vancouver as he didn't have the time. Sadly it wasn't a good experience, they obvious jacked up the rear of the engine through the bonnet which screwed that up and didn't grease the input shaft so I have an annoying reminder in the form of a squeak when I let the clutch out. :( Worse of all they kept trying to tell me the bonnet was screwed up when the Rover came in...
