End of Season Run Oct 20th-21st

#1 Post by ANDYD » Tue Sep 18, 2018 11:12 pm

Hi All,

Each year we have an End Of Season Run which is often the last over-night run of the Season. This will be a 2 day off-road run into the wonderful wilderness of BC. This year it will be held on the weekend of Sat 20th - Sun 21st October, it will likely have a Hot Dinner included at the overnight camp and a pancake breakfast for Rover-Lander members and their companions.

Placer Mountain - Ashnola Traverse - Oct 20th-21st 2018

What - Two day run, overnight camp out & end of the season dinner (details below).

When - Saturday Oct 20th and Sunday Oct 21st 2018

Where - 9am Saturday Meeting at Whatcom Road at A&W/Tims just off highway #1 at Abbotsford. 9:30am departure, heading towards Manning Park on highway #3, (last fuel is at Eastgate, just before Copper Creek). Turn off at Copper Creek, winding our way across Placer Mountain to the Ashnola River. Back on the highway#3 near Hedley at 2pm (ish) Sunday. Back at Abbotsford by 5pm (ish).
Note - Friday night option to camp out at Copper Creek and meet the group at 12 noon on Saturday.

What Else - This is a two day, one night off-road trip. Wilderness camping, bring everything you need with you. The road conditions will be mainly small FSR with a few narrow and steep sections, nothing that a stock Land Rover can not handle. As usual, there could be possible BC pin-striping from overgrown sections (but not much expected on this run). Possibly a couple inches of fresh snow at the peak.
We plan to have a big campfire and our annual club "End of Season" dinner/BBQ besides the Ashnola River where the overnight camp will be. The dinner and breakfast will be provided by the club. Bring your own drinks.
The loop eventually brings us out near Hedley on highway #3 around Sunday lunch time, where we head back to Vancouver and home.

Please post up and let us know if you are coming (we need a dinner count)!
Cheers,
Andy

Hey Andy,

I'm planning on coming out for it and I believe Bill E too. I should have son Ben along at the very least. If he gets his truck ready, would he still be welcome if he and a friend come too? Ben is working on a Suzuki Samurai which will either show us up, or be a source of mockery and derision if he brings it. He will contribute $'s if the Saturday evening meal is going ahead.

Hi Dave . I remember Ben , a handsome lad that takes after his mother. He's welcome of course. We are almost finished with the planning and will let everyone know what's up soon.

Hi All,

 Forgot. I thought I had already RSVPed. I'm in. 8)

I think the Samurai should do very well. They're very light, and skinny enough to fit anywhere.

Hey Andy,

I'm bringing a co pilot, plus Ben in his Suzuki Samurai and his friend Mike. They are all anticipating contributing to the meals costs so there will be four including me coming out Saturday morning.

Hey, the weekend is nearly here!
Looks like the weather should stay sunny for the weekend, but on saying that be prepared to expect it to drop to 0 deg's at night. Bring along that extra sleeping bag and a few extra layers.
I haven't heard from anyone going up on Friday and meeting the group at Copper Creek so I'm expecting to see everyone for breakfast at Whatcom Road,
see you there....
Cheers,
Andy

Thank you Andy and Shawn for a great trip and wonderful meals....everything seemed to be perfectly organized and went off without a hitch...or a winch.

Driving back today on the Hope-Princeton, up and down and through all those twisty turns I was reminded of a story relating to that drive. Dr. Bill Low was the second owner of the Grizzly Torque and used it extensively in his work as a naturalist. In his travels, he came across a lone Eagle chick which he adopted and it became his constant companion.

Bills brother tells a story about how unnerving it was to drive the Hope-Princeton with Bill and the Eagle. The Eagle would perch on the bulkhead behind the front seats and as the Land Rover would lean into the turns the Eagle's beak would brush Bill's brother's ear.

Here is a very poor picture of the Eagle in it's favourite traveling perch in the Grizzly Torque, the rather large and wild bird would make me nervous also in addition to navigating the Hope-Princeton in the early 60's.

Had a great weekend guys even though we did not prepare for sleeping in the cold.

The mines were definetly worth the drive to the top. The barb wire was removed and we would've been able to drive in but another group made a big fuss about there not being enough room even though there was plenty. I think the wire was in place to keep the cows out.

Hey Stuart, that's a cool story about the Eagle, I hadn't heard about that part of the GT story before.

Hi Colin, yes it was a frosty night! I guess you didn't see my last post about bringing the extra sleeping bags lol...

A wonderful trip, a good mix of off-road fun, great views, sunny weather, big camp fire and a tasty dinner.
Thanks to everyone who came along to celebrate the End of Season run.

A couple of photos here, more coming soon;

Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,

We did read the post about being ready for extreme weather, but didn't realize how unprepared we were. I have not done a lot of camping and never at -5c.

Thank you for putting on the trip Andy and also to Shawn for cooking a great breakfast and supper, as well as all the other volunteers that made this trip happen.

I enjoyed meeting with everyone.

Cheers, Oliver

PS, Andy if you bring a file along next time I will sharpen your saw.
