Autoplan, Insurance and ICBC

#1 Post by seatosky » Sun Apr 22, 2018 3:21 pm

I've been searching around for insurance options for my Defender that's arriving soon, and haven't come up with much more than what ICBC can offer. None of the third-party insurers will touch a right-hand drive vehicle - some of them will stop you as soon as you say Land Rover.

So, with that said...what has been the experience of some Defender owners out there? Issues specific to RHD, importing a model, etc.

ICBC has nothing about specific Defender models in their system. I have seen some pickups with truck plates, and some without.

Is there actually an insurer somewhere that will take on Defenders and ensure that an appropriate value is given should there be a total write-off?

Any thoughts - or even a recommendation of a specific person at an Autoplan broker - are appreciated!

Have you thought of getting it appraised ( registered auto apraiser ? , then getting ICBC to insure as to the appraised value?

You’re talking about the same insurance company whose computer system said “White” for my old Disco (entered as “DCVRY”) even though it was Gold...I’ve never heard of them doing an agreed value for insurance. That’s something you have to argue with them when the unthinkable happens.

When you go to do your insurance you can state the declared value of the vehicle, at least this is a good starting point.

I haven't dug deeper than talking to a regular Autoplan agent on this, but I did ask (a few years ago) about giving a declared value for my 2A. The answer I was given was that the only way to do this was to have the vehicle on a collector plate, have it professionally assessed, and then come to an agreed value.
