series tire options?

series tire options?
I am considering changing the stock 205R16 on my series 3 88 to a set of 21580R16 tires. Has anyone used a similar size on a swb series truck? Any problems or concerns? This truck has the later pattern 16 inch rims (similar to the D90 steel wheel's offset from what I understand).
Any advice would be appreciated.

Why so small? I'm running 255/85R16s on mine and they're fantastic on a series truck -- as are Shawn, Bill, Bernie and several others. At the least, I would suggest 235/85R16. This will increase your ride height, increase your mileage, and there should be no problem with rubbing with the 235s and your defender style wheels -- and any reasonably fit engine will have no problem keeping them rolling.

215/80/16's would be sooo.. cute. Is it a "low-rider" look you are going for?
7.50 16's (for all intents and purposes replaced by 235/85/16 a 32" diameter tire) are the stock size on 109's that have the same motor, tranny & diff gears that your 88 has. You already have wider off-set wheels. Why not go with the most popular size tire in the world. Jeeper's and others just dream of being able to put a 32" tire on their vehicle but have to make all kinds of body and suspension lifts to be able to do it. Your's was made at the factory to accept that size. To go a bit larger is possible too without making any other changes other than adjust the turn stops. As Dave mentions above.
By going to a larger diameter, you loose aceleration but gain speed. Your speedo will not read correctly (did it ever?) and as mentioned already, you gain ground clearance. big bumps (logs, rocks etc.) are now easy to get over when they may have been a struggle before. Gearing in 1st, low is so low from stock that you will still have a lower ground speed than most others unless they have made mods.

8) 235x85rx16's Dunlop Radial Rovers. Agressive enough to get through the mud bog at Greg's, the Whipsaw Trail, Chet's crack and Canopener(with a little help from my friends). 10 ply and relatively quite on the road. Not that big hum like BFG's. Relatively cheap! That's my nickels worth at any rate.

I'll agree too.
235/85/16 is a great choice for a Series.

If you do a lot of road driving or highway miles interspersed (sp?) with off road day the Radial Rover R/T is the best choice as has been stated. If you don't put a lot of road miles on, then I'd go for the Interco TrXus MT. It is the nicest all around off road tire I've driven and is quiet and smooth on the road. The only downfall is soft compounding so road life is not that great (I would guess 40000 kms). If you basically JUST off road the beast, then I would go with a serious off road tire.

Series Tires
After going through the same debate in July I purchased five 235/85-16 BFG M/T's for my 109.
Absolutely fabulous....
The Mac Trail was a great test and I couldn't have been happier. I purchased the truck with lower wider tires and am glad I made the change that I did.
I bought them at Costco for about $200 each.
