steering play

#1 Post by Turton » Wed Jan 20, 2016 10:29 am

Hi all, so it looks like I solved my oil spray issue ( thanks Terry ), now time to tackle the steering play. I would appear previous owner replaced all the ball joins, I replaced the relay (that was fun) but I still have an unsafe amount of play in the steering. If I buy a rebuild kit for the steering box will this solve this or do you thinks I'll be getting in to deep? I am still going to put the rover on jacks and look for anything not tight but want you opinion on the box.
thanks
Geoff

You first need to find where the play is coming from. Have someone wiggle the steering wheel, while going through the whole system from the steering shaft to the swivels.

If it is the steering box, it has an adjustment. Read the manual and follow those instruction to adjust the box play. Hopefully that is your problem. It should only take a few minutes to do.

So I moved the rover into the workshop and jacked up the front end. I can moved the steering wheel about 3-4 inches before the arm attached to the box moves. I tightened up the box before, unscrewed lock nut-finger tightened the screw- retightened lock nut. I don't want to over do it and make the steering to hard. Will try again tomorrow and see what happens

I might get off lucky! I adjusted the box which took out a bit of play but the real issue was on 15 psi in one front tire. Duh! I might be road ready. Speedo still way out after new cable installed but not really worried about that. It can't do the speed limit anyways
