CFB Suffield Defenders

#1 Post by Tony4921 » Sun Nov 08, 2015 7:09 pm

I am hoping to go to CFB Suffield to buy an ex MOD defender. They have not come up for sale for about a year. I have called the auctioneer, I think the call was answered by Tamsin, and they don't know when the MOD will send the next batch. Does anybody know when they are likely to come up?

Not for a while. Tamsin is the right person to talk to. They sold most of what they had and the remaining vehicles are still in use by the British Armed Forces.

My understanding is that they still have not decided on a replacement for the Defender. This is probably leading to them hanging on to everything they have.

that may be true for actual use. At Suffield, which is solely a training facility for the UK, they are replacing the Defender with gm pickup trucks. Keep in mind this solely for training not deployment. They are removing Defenders from service as they develop more expensive repairs. However they had built a large inventory of them before selling the lot of them last time. It will be sometime until they start selling them again.

Here is an example of what they are using instead of defenders at Suffield. https://www.gcsurplus.ca/mn-eng.cfm?snc ... f=aff-post

My understanding is the pickups were not very reliable and they did not find them adequate for replacing the defenders.

Well, that is probably true for deployment, but they had many chev pickups at Suffield when I picked up my 110, and discussion with staff was that they would be moving to more of them as they removed 110's from service. Staff on the base also clarified it would be some time before more 110's came for sale.

So my answer to the original post stands. No more 110's from Suffield for a while.

What Defender are you looking for?
There is/was a 110 for sale http://www.roverlanders.bc.ca/roverforu ... f=3&t=8262
And I know of a 90 for sale in Edmonton. Owner did rebuild and repaint to BATUS colors and kept running gear more or less stock.
