2.5 Diesel conversion

#1 Post by roverdevin » Thu Sep 29, 2005 7:50 pm

Does anyone know what kind of job it would be to put a Rover 2.5L natural diesel engine into IIA 88" petrol? I've always preferred diesel to gas, and have been toying with the idea of some kind of conversion. How does this conversion work, compatability-wise, and how much jostling or fabircation is needed in the engine bay?

Diesel conversion...

Hi Devin,

I'm sure there is a couple of club members who have personaly done this very conversion......so while we wait for them to share their wisdom, here is some interesting reading from the East Coast Rovers site, when they put a TDI into a series truck.

Andy and Devin
The only problem with that East Coast Rover conversion is that they put the 300 TDI into a coiler frame. I've heard that the TDI's will not go into the leaf sprung frames. It would be nice to have a coiler airportable with a 300 TDI. It might propel me up those rock garden trails a bit better. Then again if I had a bit more experience on the trails my airportable might do a lot better anywhere.
Cheers

The ECR site also discusses a 2.5 naturally aspirated conversion, which is what I'm possibly interested in. My understanding there is that it fit in the 88" chassis with the removal of the battery bracket...

I was hoping someone might know...is there room for the battery in the bay with a 2.5NA, because I already have a second fuel tank under my seat. Also, I was curious about transmission compatability and so forth.

200 or 300TDi would be lovely, but not really realistic for my budget.

The 2.5NA and 200TDI use the same basic block. Chassis mounts and transmission mounts are the same as the 2.25 petrol and diesel.
