I have been following a rumor that the Husky refinery in PG handles higher lead crude, is older, and could not easily be modified to generate unleaded fuel as free as we have elsewhere.

Supposedly, the rumor goes, an exception was made for them in order to keep local jobs in PG, as the retrofit wouldn't be economic otherwise. The said gasoline can only be sold at pumps a fixed distance from PG.

Anyone know of any more details? Might be handy to fuel some antique landy's passing through that area. Full leaded gasoline is superior for some older engines.

Tetraethyllead was added to gasoline, lead is not removed from it.

But the drawbacks of such a lethal chemical are still there. I wouldn't want to go anywhere near it. HeadDamage is correct that the lead in 'leaded gasoline' was added on purpose and isn't naturally occurring. If there's really a significant amount of lead, there go your catalytic converters (not on an ancient LR, but everything from the 70s until now).

I assume there is some confusion. Lead does not occur within crude. If it did, the hydrotreater catalyst would be damaged. As stated, allowing any TEL into the fuel would result is 99% of cars being damaged and that would not be a great business plan. Perhaps they had a strange relaxation to allow higher sulphur or nitrogen levels although this could lead to vehicle damage as well and it would be highly doubtful.

Reading Husky's annual report, they put $300+ million upgrade capital into that refinery in 2013. The federal government fuel standards are pretty tightly regulated and enforced. I've never heard of anyone being allowed to not meet the minimums. It is one nice thing about Canada, that you can trust that fuel you purchase is to spec.
